Apple promises five years of software support for the iPhone 15, two less than Google and Samsung

There is, however, a catch.

Cool

My iPad pro 10.5 which was released in June 2017 has just received its last update so that's actually 7 years of support. When Apple say 5 years it only means at least 5y

My iPad has had its battery life roughly divided by 2 but otherwise still works just as well after 6,5 years of daily usage

Anonymous, 06 Jun 2024Apple has always been delivering five years of software sup... moreBoth of these statements are wrong. The first iPhone had 3 years, the iPhone 6s had 7 years, and the „throttling“ is battery related prevention of unexpected shutdowns when a used battery cannot supply the needed voltage. An Android phone would just shut down (had that happen myself).

Another Charlie Chaplin kind of thing came from the 🍏brand. Marketing to boost iphone sale .🤣🤭

Its not about how many updates you can do, but after how many updates the phone starts to struggle

Samsung or google can say that offers 20 years of updates but we know how after just 2-3 big updates the phone will work, even a high end. Iphones after 2-3 big updates still works fine, after 5 starts to struggle

Apple has always had five-year support window for their iPhones. The iPhone 5s had as much as six years (iOS 7, all the way to iOS 12), and so did the iPhone 6s (iOS 9 - iOS 15). And given the improved hardware in the recent phones, plus incremental OS updates these days, I believe the newer iPhones can go as far as 8 years, without major performance drops.

My iPhone 11 still going strong. Battery health as we speak now are at 90%, no crack, no scratches, never change parts and still looking like brand new. Using it as my daily driver together with my Realme 7 Pro. Not going to buy new iPhone until my iPhone 11 completely unusable to use.

You still getsecurity updates beyond, it is okay considering that operating systems have incremental upgrades every year these days
Although further updates are welcome, always

Anonymous, 06 Jun 2024Apple has always been delivering five years of software sup... moreThat's why I'm still not convinced about Samsung and Google's seven-year OS update policy. At some time, they could be doing the same thing as Apple did before. The only way for such a policy to work is to normalize spare parts availability like Fairphone has always been doing since day one.

Ouifuf, 06 Jun 2024Tbh I don't know anyone who would buy a brand new high... moreI know a few people that buy the latest iphone and then keep it until it basically no longer works or becomes really outdated or it's not really worth changing the battery anymore. They are not interested in having the latest phone and just are happy once it continues to work reasonably well. Other things in their lives have much higher priority. After all, people are different and have different priorities

Ouifuf, 06 Jun 2024Tbh I don't know anyone who would buy a brand new high... moreThat's why I never bother brands like Sony and ASUS only giving two OS updates. Most people keep their phone for three to four years, and that's before looking at those who keep buying and returning phones through carriers every one or two years. Even in the secondhand market, people are still looking at older flagship phones despite the end of official software support. It's unsurprising to see the likes of Samsung Galaxy S10/S20 series and 2019/2020 Sony Xperia 1/5 roaming on the streets today. I already encountered those phones several times.

Apple has always been delivering five years of software support on all iPhones, so that's nothing to worry about. I'm more worried about Apple purposedly throttling older iPhones after latest OS updates.

Tbh I don't know anyone who would buy a brand new high end phone and actually use it for 5 years. 3 at most 4 is what you would usually see. But for those people that would wanna keep it, it's still gonna work once the updates run out, it's not going to get bricked in
