Only the Galaxy S25 Ultra will get a camera upgrade, S25 and S25+ to retain the same hardware

19 June 2024
This will be the fourth generation in a row with no camera upgrades.

Darth Caesium, 20 Jun 2024Well, they could increase the thickness of said phone from ... moreThe S24 is aimed at those of us who like compact/light weight phones (by today's standards anyway). Of course they could make it thicker, but then you'd end up with a brick like the Pixel 8, for example, which is a minus for me especially since, as I said, the cameras on the S24 are already doing a great job for my needs/use, so it doesn't need to lose its trim proportions to accommodate larger cameras. Samsung sold 8% more S24/+/Ultra in the first quarter this year, so they know what they're doing.

Anonymous, 23 Jun 2024Stupid? Speak normally. And second show me a better brand. ... moreApple, even though they're pretty damn bad themselves, is far superior to Samsung. I'd rather get an Apple than a copy of an Apple. Considering that the Buds3 Pros are gonna be stem shaped like the Airpods Pro, I'd say that Samsung is just completely copying Apple. Shame they can't copy their quality.

Also, the fact that you focus on brands instead of the products further shows your stupidity. Why should you care if a product is from Samsung, Apple or idk Roku or something, if the product is great for the price? I don't think about stuff in terms of brands, for example I like Vivo's flagships, Xiaomi's midrangers and Oneplus's second tier flagships like the 12, but I don't love everything about them. You just glaze on Samsung for some reason, it's ok if you like it but to say other companies are jokes when the real joke is you and your sweetheart Samsung, then yeah, of course I'm annoyed.

I remember when the stock android was the best, when LG was considered good, when Samsung was horrible and when OxygenOS was the best as well and I can confidently say that everything's just hype. There's nothing fancy that OneUI does so well that others can't and the same can be said about Apple. ALL types of OSs have bugs and glitches, you act like the S24 Ultra is perfect in terms of software, it most definitely is not.

I remember when everyone clowned on Samsung and now they're the best because of what? Nothing much, the only good thing they have going for them which I WILL commend them for is the great customization but even that is limited because MOST countries do not have access to goodlock, so yeah. Also, you need to download a lot of stuff from the Galaxy Store and tap some wrong things and you'll get plagued with ads. If a Chinese phone did that you'd lose your marbles but Samsung's fine right? Yeah, the "best right now". I'd rather go get an Apple phone than a Samsung one now. Just disgustingly bad. And stoopid people like you encourage this behaviour. Sad, really.

Why would you even want to use your current phone at that point when it's more mid than the current sh*t phones? Something like the X90 Pro+ is gonna last someone far longer than the S24 Ultra. Far more future proof phone.

No mention of the ultrawide and telephoto sensor size? It's still possible to keep the same camera sensor size as before while giving bigger Megapixel with Quad Bayer system.

jiyen235, 20 Jun 2024The only people I personally have seen using 4 year+ old ph... moreOr people who can afford it but they just can't see the purpose of upgrading each year for such minor updates

Anonymous, 20 Jun 2024There are many people that use phones from 4 years ago. Don... moreThe only people I personally have seen using 4 year+ old phones are either Apple users, people who are buying the phone second hand or even later and people who just can't afford to spend too much on a quickly depreciating product like a smartphone.

Regardless, neither of them care about android or security updates. 80% of people don't care about security, they just want to use some social media, play some casual games, take some pics and watch some vids on their phone. That sums up most of the use cases. The people who really want the security updates are the ones who don't need it, they don't f*ck around with stupid stuff online. Regardless of security updates, you do stupid stuff you're gonna get hacked, security updates help sure but no software update can fix the user.

Besides, let's just say that some people use the phone for 4 years or more on the regular. Why do I have to pay MORE for them? They want the huge update cycle, not me, I just want a good device that lasts long. If I wanted old hardware like the S24 U has I'd have just bought an S22 Ultra, that's like 80% the phone the S24 Ultra is. I want something new that makes the purchase worth it, like cutting edge tech like close focusing telephotos or 1 inch sensors with variable apertures. Samsung's AI is available on my S22 Ultra now, so what cutting edge feature does the S24 Ultra have? Nothing, really.

Also, why wouldn't I resell the phone later on? Like seriously am I just gonna throw the phone in the trash? What's the point of that it's just e-waste. Maybe some guy out there could use a flagship phone for cheap or some people could make something good out of the parts, regardless, it's not like you're never going to sell your stuff. Why keep old phones?

And still, it doesn't matter if the actual market price of the phone has depreciated or not, after a while the phone just loses its value and you said it yourself, you're going to upgrade at one point and really old/backwards type hardware like on the S24 Ultra is going to get/feel old real fast. Samsung's gonna capitalize on it and change stuff to make you want to upgrade faster and make the S24 Ultra feel insignificant, because it is.

Idk man, you think I just hate on Samsung but even Vivo's X80 Pro wasn't good enough back in the day, that phone got old fast but the Mi 11 Ultra didn't, that's what I meant by good tech. The Mi 11 Ultra gives you cameras that are still capable enough to go toe to toe. That's the great thing you need. The car and TV comparison was weird, those things are long lasting. Phones and let's say laptops are better comparisons, their tech changes fast.

Anonymous, 20 Jun 2024There are many people that use phones from 4 years ago. Don... moreI don't thinkyouve grasp the concept of depreciation quite right. Depreciation is different than value.

Depreciation of a smartphone does happen regardless of our own perceived value of the product. As you've mentioned security and software updates will eventually cease to continue and thus sooner or later apps will fail to update based on the security implementation or by the developers the supported OS version or android kernel.

Example is Fdroid.org is required to get termux app after Android 13L. Termux within PlayStore is no longer updated due to 13L as the Android kernel and OS has significant changes that prevent certain functions and thus side loading is required. Sooner or later other changes will affect or limit older OS and Ui versions down the road where an OS update or new model will be required. This depreciation. If this doesn't nor will affect you (with all other apps you use) then your perceived value of the product does not change.

This is less an issue with AndroidOS than it is with iOS, which for over a decade Apple poorly would publicly insult or make fun of the installed base of their devices versus the current AndroidOS installed base; and failed to note nuances just to keep it's users in fear of going above the walled garden. Quite literary their main campus is designed as such a structure enforcing this. I saw that for what it was after too long.

After hearing about the camera upgrades i'll probably stick with my S23 Ultra for another year. More cost cutting from Samsung

Don't you think they would like OS and security updates? Depreciation means nothing if you aren't planning on re-selling the product when you're ready to upgrade. Same with a car or TV.

I have the S24 and the cameras are fine and do a great job even in very low light conditions. There's only so much room for improvement for cameras that fit on a smartphone; bigger sensors = bigger lenses and Samsung obviously don't want the camera lenses to protrude a ridiculous amount like they do on the iPhone and some other Android flagships. I like that compromise, especially since Samsung's processing made the picture/video quality coming out of these cameras among the best anyway and compete well with larger sensor cameras from other smartphone manufacturers.
