Weekly poll: is the Red Magic 9S Pro your next phone? What about the Red Magic 9S Pro+?

07 July 2024
These are gaming phones, but their practical design and aggressive pricing might appeal to non-gamers too.

The 9s Pro will be my next phone. Would have waited for the 10 of my ROG 5S hadn't dropped in a bucket of water. I bought a cheap Moto G as an emergency phone, and can't stand it. No way I can keep using it till the 10 releases.

Would like a micro sd slot and rubber sealed sliding doors on the sides of the phone to add water/dust resistance along with an ip rating. Also an unlockable bootloader.

I have the Red Magic Pro 9. I've had it for about 4 or 5 months and I really like it. I've had Samsung phones since the S8, upgrading almost every year and honestly after using the Red Magic, I don't think I'm ever going back to a $1k+ phone. Yes there are some trade offs. At this price point there has to be. But the phone is speedy/snappy, solidly built and uses high end internals. Yes the cameras aren't great but coming from a Fold 3, I don't notice much if a difference. Yes, the latest s24 Ultra and whatever comes next will blow my Red Magic out of the water but I can buy two of these phones for the price of one Samsung and not really miss anything.

I'm happy with my purchase. My days of mainstream flagships are over.

After having only galaxy phones for 12 years now, I've been happy with them. BUT, I'm a lot wiser regarding phones, and I'm DISGUSTED that cos I'm European, we don't get the best Snapdragon chipset, but Samsungs far inferior Exynos chips. I'd switch to a Red Magic this second.

I'd say "maybe, but it's too expensive at launch" but there was no such option.
Also, camera doesn't look very promising. But at least they kept the headphone jack, that's nice to see.

Since no Apple or Samsung or Google or Sony do this i am not interested.

Anonymous, 08 Jul 2024Awful software support Horrible camera performance Underw... moreBad Software Support - Yes, the updates are slow and mostly short-lived. But ZTE is improving, and they have promised 3 years with the 9 Pro (don't know about the 9S Pro).

Horrible Cameras - No, I wouldn't say the cameras are "horrible". They are far from the best, but the Main GN5 OIS sensor is not too bad with a Gcam Port (Same Sensor as the Galaxy S22 Series), and the Ultrawide JN1 Sensor is used even in phones like the Vivo X100 Ultra. As long as you use Gcam, the photos are very usable. There's just no optical zoom though.

Bad Screen - No. The Resolution and quality are actually very good. You do not need more than 400 PPI anyway, and it does reach over 1000 Nits in HBM mode. It also supports HDR10. The only downside I can see is that there's no HDR10+ or Dolby Vision, but most people don't need that.
