He basically announced the end of Symbian before having a replacement OS in place. It was several months before the first Nokia Windows phone appeared, and in that time any remaining developers of any note simply abandoned it.
He made a U-turn shortly after the announcement, but the damage had been done. If Nokia had announced that they were ceasing to support Symbian in the future maybe after the first Windows phones were released then it would have made sense.

Anonymous, 13 Jul 2013Are you talking about an $50 Walmart Android? Or maybe a cu... moreMy first droid phone was Samsung Galaxy Y, it was fine but there was lag issues so after trying it out for 8 months i sold it then bought a S3, it too had lagging, heating, battery draining issues due to which i sold it after 5 months then i was waiting for HTC One X+ and when it got released i bought it. It was smooth with small lags occasionally but had poor battery and ram management so i sold it then waited some time for Samsung Galaxy S4 and HTC One. Checked them at a store, i didn't buy the HTC one coz it doesn't have SD card, non removable battery and 4 MP camera, the phone was smooth. I bought S4 because of so many feature but it lags, heats up, poor RAM and battery management similar to droid phones. I'll sell it too when Jolla releases Sailfish os based phones in India..

AnonD-144351, 13 Jul 2013Wanna know why Elop went with MS...
http://www.businessw... moreIf you apply common sense to some of his comments in the article, you can see they make no sense. A couple obvious blunders:
"Google refused to give Nokia any advantages over his smaller rivals meaning Nokia's corps of 11,600 engineers would have next to no ability to add their own innovations to Google's software."
Two points regarding that comment.
First, why should google tilt the favor of an open OS in Nokia's favor? Android was intended to be an even playing field for all hardware manufacturers.
Second point is quite simple, how did going with Microsoft give Nokia's developers any more opportunity to provide their own innovations to WP8? In fact, in the article you reference, Elop talks about the layoffs he was going to have by going with Microsoft.
As far as Symbian never being an option, that's your opinion and Elop's decision. The writer's opinion in the article was also an opinion that it was not loved by Nokia users. If you read the comments about the Symbian OS being killed on the various websites allowing comments, most people wrote they believed it was the wrong thing to do. The problem with Symbian was never the core OS, it was the UI layer. The Symbian OS was the most efficient at managing resources of any OS, including those available today.
Nokia redeveloped the UI layer and the APIs for Symbian 3 different times. Each time forcing the app development community to re-write most of their apps from scratch. The Nokia design leads just had no clue of how to design a use interface that could keep up with advances in the hardware.
And don't read your own bias' into my comments. My comment had nothing to do with whining about Nokia not having Android. If you had taken the time to read the comment I responded to, I said that it was in fact Nokia and Elop's fault they were saddled with the hardware limitations of WP8. It was about the choice being Elop's.
Also, Elop still has a very good in house option to WP8 os if he wanted to use it. It would be a good move on his part to give consumers the choice of that os and WP8 on one of next year's yet to be announced Lumia phones and let the market dictate the winner.

AnonD-77318, 13 Jul 2013just look at the Galaxy S4 features for example. this Lumia... moreIt's still a great phone. You are missing the point. It's not made to compete with specs against the Android flagships. It doesn't have to. It's still and HD screen. 4.5inch is still a great size and 720p is more practical. It's still got 2gb ram and the SoC it uses will be sufficient for what it does. Plus those things save it power. It's still a brighter Amoled screen. And it's a revolutionary camera. It's not some horrific old device. It's just not a super skinny, highest specs device.

AnonD-155275, 12 Jul 2013IT'S Not Nokia's Fault , This is Microsoft's Fault because ... moreI disagree. It is Nokia's fault because nobody forced them to partner with Microsoft to use WP8. It was Elop's (former Microsofie) choice. He could have used Symbian, Android or Microsoft on their Lumia line, and here we are.
I'll say it again, did it occur to you that people are bashing this device because they expect more from Nokia? The only remarkable thing about this phone is the camera and the 2gb RAM.
Then you have:
Chipset Qualcomm MSM8960 Snapdragon
CPU Dual-core 1.5 GHz Krait
GPU Adreno 225
Wasn't the MSM8960 released in 2011? Looks like Nokia is trying to clear out it's warehouses of old parts with this device.
If WP8 is holding back Nokia from using 1080p (it is because WP8 doesn't support it), then they should port their Asha 1.0 platform to the Lumia line OR use Android.
There are people out there who have used prior Microsoft Mobile OS' and will never buy another phone with Microsoft OS because of their history of support on Mobile platforms has been a nightmare.

Much much much discussions going out over here, This directly proves that Android users are getting afraid that their fone will be just a mess to show off. Just dont worry, get Lumia, use it. And if u dont like it there always a store near you to get Android device. Use Lumia once!!! I also did. I left android and I am all upto WP8. Loving it.
