A Samsung foldable display developer explains the history of Galaxy folding screens

08 August 2024
The journey started way back in 2008 - before Samsung even made its first Android phone. Special new materials had to be developed to overcome difficult challenges.

Didnt Nokia showcased flexible displays way way way way back?

I've led you straight to the actual patent. Plus, my low opinion of Samsung has to do with my bad experiences with Samsung. I don't shill for any one particular brand.

Low-Temperature Polycrystalline Oxide, or LTPO, is an OLED display backplane technology developed by Apple.

Darth Caesium, 08 Aug 2024And who do you think made LTPO? I'll give you a clue —... moreI have a low opinion of your opinions you state as facts lol and cannot back them up. Sorry I'm not some child writing 2 sentences for kicks. If you're an adult come across as one in your statements and not some social meme talking points lol.

"Sais more about you than me" Lol is that all you got? Come at me bruh. Lol. You couldn't even back up your initial post I quoted. 😒 weak.

Ouifuf, 08 Aug 2024Yes, and?that's just a huge contradiction, I despise Sammy myself but I won't go and basically spreading wrong ideas just to own them or anything. That's some 10 year old's logic. Hope you can get the maturity to not become a real hypocrite at least

Show me where APLLE actually made it?!

They do NOT make theie products not ven in protype. They collaborate.

Next thing you'll tell me is they made OLED LOL.

Do you have proof of what you're saying or just conjecture?!

            Proof!

Ouifuf, 08 Aug 2024I genuinely cannot tell if you're being serious lmao. ... moreYeah I've been on this site referencing phones as far back as 1997!

Again YOU focus on HARDWARE Specs ONLY! That's mostly what this sites DB is and can only do.

Yet when it comes to sales, repeat sales. Established brand name recognition and the OVERALL product in what you use both SW & HW ..

Samsung rules and leads the competition. Either you cannot read what I've been stating or reading comprehension is failing you. I was very clear concise and direct of my statements and stance and yet NOBODY can effectively challenge any of that because
1 they have understood what I'm saying,
              2 they haven't used a foldable yet
3 they don't do any research outside of being a fanboy
4 they see with theie eyes and only read biased opinion articles that tickle their fanboy buffalo stance.

              Yush's are not gettin'it!

Pick up the competition start using their software, add accounts for services especially all of Google services ans apps and features
Pound for pound Samsung still leads with software across the entire product that works and leads. Nobody comes close.

That's why their a trusted brand. They have communities where they can interact with, ask questions get answers provide feedback and they learn and work with the competition share their technology and expertise. The others don't do that! Not on a global scale.

If all of them shipped their products globally right now you'd see an initial uptake in sales but after 1Q dropsifnificantly due to poor software implementation and the overall product wouldn't be as great to end users outside of theie respective regions.

When will you all realize this and start talking on this front vs hardware specs. Lol

Ouifuf, 08 Aug 2024I've seen a lot more flips then you'd think. And ... moreOmfg.

Y do YOU think they became a TRUSTED brand in the first place? They didn't start shipping foldables globally initially either.

You can bend, twist, runabout but the facts are facts. All the condition has had 4 generations of their products and did a fine job at accelerating design implementing better parts and reducing weight and size and did phenomenally well.

So why do YOU think they've delivered sub-par on the global front? Hmmmm.

moni11811, 08 Aug 2024Foldables are amazing but UTG will always crack That wasn&... moreAnd the competition brought NOTHING else nor better to the table.

Again what's your point? It was an innovation as it worked at the time required. Samsung learned the competition sat waited, and licensed. That's it.

DeepIn2U, 08 Aug 2024Sorry but the earlier statement was PURE fanboy presence an... moreAnd who do you think made LTPO? I'll give you a clue — it's not Samsung. In fact, Apple of all people made it and patented it. Samsung uses an extremely similar thing called HOP that is the exact same in practice.

I am not denying just how integral Samsung's skill and knowledge has been in driving foldable displays, but it doesn't mean that other OEMs haven't been able to make a better final product. I think, if anything, if you're correct that Samsung is providing them with better hinges, then it shows just how complacent Samsung has become in that they won't even use their improvements on their own products because they don't have proper competition in the Western market for foldable phones.

Oh, and you accusing me of being a fanboy is hilarious, because I explicitly don't fanboy over brands, I buy what I think suits my needs and wants the most when I need to buy a new phone. I haven't stuck with one brand in the way so many people do. My family all use Samsung even though they complain about their devices all the time, and they will continue to do so even when I prove to them that X brand doesn't have these problems.

If you're this annoyed at me because I seem to have such a low opinion of Samsung, it speaks volumes about you. YOU are the fanboy here, not me, if you constantly feel the need to defend your brand from online enthusiasts at the slightest of criticisms.

Darth Caesium, 08 Aug 2024They can design the materials without being relevant in the... moreSorry but the earlier statement was PURE fanboy presence and stance and you know it!

LG makes OLED/Amoled yes one of 6 in the globe.

Yet still no folding product and still not selling to the industry.

Like your comment and others down-played Samsungs innovations and industry leadership in terms of folding screens and devices.

                      Bar NONE they STILL LEAD!
The final product still outsells thr industry on a global scale year after year except for Q1 of 2024 as the Z Fold 6 wasn't even announced yet.

Changes in the screen have ONLY been in refresh rate and brightness (back panel NOT the amoled itself) is exactly what I stated amongst what the competition has offered. It is STILL sold and licensed from Samsung.

Eating around the bush of that fact dies NOT change THE FACTS!

Everyone else is bringing parts and innovating at assembly or product size and weight and design. Software and synergies of USING the hardware as a whole product still fails with the competition.

                      These are the facts.
Again stick to the topic at hand of the article. Mentioning LG IF they sell to the competition doesn't really move the debate forward.

You're on a website that has a database of every folding phone. You can find every single specification for every single competitor to the Z fold.

And idk why you think patents mean anything. All well and good Samsung have a lot of patents, but it doesn't make a difference when there products just aren't as good.

And I think you just argued against your own point. The only reason Samsung is the best selling is because it's a trusted brand and their phones are widely available, not because they're better. Compare this with Huawei, Oppo, Xiaomi etc, its nowhere near as accessible. That is changing though. Huawei sold more foldables in china than anyone else and Honor sold more in Europe than anyone else (in book style foldables)

jiyen235, 08 Aug 2024holy moly this guy is JACKED. Guess now we know why Samsung... moreLook at the dates. Carbon Fibre is a LIT more expensive to fabricate for custom use back in 2018 that it is now in 2024.

Example Ford's GT 350 carbon wheels to replace all 4 back in 2018 would cost you $30K USA! the GT-500 debuted in 2020 and it's carbon-fibre wheels (along with the GT350 would cost you $20K USA to replace. More and more companies know how to weave it with epoxy and have theie own facilities to fabricate it (not make the actual carbon Fibre itself they order massive sheets of it from vendors or manufacturers that make it)

If Samaung did NOT license nor sell components the industry of folding phones would've never taken off nor help reduce cosst to the consumer.

Do your research, don't show yourself as being obtuse for lack of doing it.

DeepIn2U, 08 Aug 2024Only way to remain relevant?! Samsung is the ONLY compan... moreThey can design the materials without being relevant in the final product. LG used to make phones, and are still the 2nd biggest display manufacturer in the world. Yet, where is their phone business? Gone, shattered, lost.

Oh, and I'm strictly not a fanboy by any means. If a company does better with cameras than another one, and has a snappy and lean UI (plus has Google Play Services, but that's obviously a pre-requisite), I'll happily switch over to that competitor. Having last had a Samsung phone before replacing it with a Google Pixel 7 Pro, I'm happy to say that I might switch to a Vivo phone next if they return to the UK. Hell, I might even switch to a Vivo foldable if that ever gets a 5× periscope or an equivalent that also performs well at 5× and 10× zoom (like a 200MP periscope that the Vivo X100 Ultra has).
