A Samsung foldable display developer explains the history of Galaxy folding screens

08 August 2024
The journey started way back in 2008 - before Samsung even made its first Android phone. Special new materials had to be developed to overcome difficult challenges.

Darth Caesium, 08 Aug 2024Oh, and even Google is hot on their tail. Google, who seems... moreOnly way to remain relevant?!

Samsung is the ONLY company in the industry that:
Makes & sells SoC's
Makes & sells RAM
Makes & sells Storage
Makes & sells AMOLED - in fact only 6 company's globally makes OLED - Asus is the only other that makes phones and OLED/AMOLED as a competitor; but nothing else)
Makes & sells mobile cameras
Makes & sells hinges and licenses them to the competition; now they've learned and design their own. It's called reverse engineering. Hey watch that 90's Ben Afflek movie to get up to speed on that lol.
Makes & sells custom alloy fabrications.

Anyone read yesterday's news of Google Android Studio being accessible for developers coming soon for remote virtual hardware testing? Guess what there are only 3 partners signed on to use this - Oppo and Samsung are 2, the others is NOT OnePlus, Honor, Vivo, nor Huweui either.

So yeah fanboy keep talking smack ya don't know anything about, as clearly you can't stick to the topic you're commenting in.

Whatever it is, galaxy phone screen still not match to any SONY XPERIA X-Bravia Engine QUALITY..

    enough said 🤣😝😆

XiaomiFan, 08 Aug 2024Agreed. Bought Xiaomi Fold 4 from China for 800 euro for 1T... moreThis has NOTHING to do with folding displays! The topic of this article, and the false statement above.

The competition has had 4yrs and yes other hardware components they exceed. Software they all fail to match Samsung in terms of offerings, stability global language support and synergies of real world use - they all fail.

Resources isn't the problem for them either it's just the xenophobic approach and stance. That's what holding rhwm all back.

Oppo is the only one that comes close! And the only one that doesn't contiually attempt to make theie UI look so much like Apple's iOS. It's really sad and yet should be an eye opener for these brand riding fanboys.

Ouifuf, 08 Aug 2024"As a pioneer of the foldable smartphone" You... moreSuch falsehood!

Where do you think the competition began?!

They are AlL still using & licensing Samsungs technologies!

Non of them make OLED,UTG ,which Honor just began using!

Please do your research before showing your fan prism and lack of knowledge. You show just how childish you are.

NONE of the competition has even dared to say ANYTHIG about their foldable displays beyond refresh rate, PWM or brightness! NONE!

Why? Because they do NOT innovate anything on the foldable displays ONLY the hinge!

Proof: Oppo Find N3 and OnePlus Open talked ONLY about the resilience of 5he folding mechanisms ans theie patents thereof NOT the display!

Time to eat yourbooteith ketchup/katshit lol

Development history? You made a gen 1 folding screen and reused it until Fold 6! It's a short history!

Ouifuf, 08 Aug 2024"As a pioneer of the foldable smartphone" You... moreAnd yet in 5-6 years foldables are still only 2% of the market and those companies with better specs and quality (as you put it) still cannot outsell Samsung. Since 2021, I've probably seen more book folds in the wild than anyone and that has only been about 12 of them. I've only seen one Z flip. Most people have never seen a foldable.

Specs are simply not enough. Most people are not spending $1500+ on phones from companies they don't know with questionable quality/reliability. It's always been that way. That's why Apple sells the most premium phones.

Do you watch the Olympics? You watch track and field? Runners tend to pace themselves if they are in the lead. They only pick up the pace if their lead is in danger. Huawei is their biggest competitor and their phones are not as accessible. The other companies are simply no threat to Samsung at this point. Apple is the only company that can force Samsung to pick up the pace.

holy moly this guy is JACKED. Guess now we know why Samsung foldables are so sturdy, this guy tests the phones lmao

Anyways, this guy is delulu for sure. He's bragging about using carbon fiber in small amounts whilst others have done it on a larger scale and actually produced thinner phones that are lighter as well. Phones are usually held and so the weight and thickness is an important aspect, not to mention the fact that the sharper sides of the newer phones mean they're uncomfy, Samsung needs to stop thinking we are all Ms and start learning what comfort actually means.

The displays are great and the speakers are nice but that's about it. These foldables have nothing much to offer outside that. Besides, most people who buy this need to buy a separate thick case for the S Pen and that's so annoying. They give neither great cameras nor an integrated S Pen, let alone proper thinness and super light bodies for these phones.

Cashgrabs used to be looked down upon, now they are celebrated. No wonder innovation is nowhere to be seen in the top companies.

Ouifuf, 08 Aug 2024"As a pioneer of the foldable smartphone" You... moreYou literally made fun of them for thinking they're first but also agreed later on that they're technically the first because this is a mainstream phone that was sold to the masses and did do acceptably well for a new type of product.

XiaomiFan, 08 Aug 2024Agreed. Bought Xiaomi Fold 4 from China for 800 euro for 1T... moreAnd how did you manage with that Chinese Rom? Was it multilingual?

XiaomiFan, 08 Aug 2024Agreed. Bought Xiaomi Fold 4 from China for 800 euro for 1T... moreWhere did you get it from? tradingshenzen?

Ouifuf, 08 Aug 2024"As a pioneer of the foldable smartphone" You... moreOh, and even Google is hot on their tail. Google, who seems to be having even worse cameras on their successor to the Google Pixel Fold, still somehow looks like it'll be capturing market share from Samsung, and that's maybe because people are tired of a constantly stagnant Samsung.

The only way that Samsung can remain relevant is if they put much better cameras onto the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold7, have an IP58 (or even IP68) rating for it, and make both displays support a digital stylus. Also, making a cheaper Samsung Galaxy Z Fold7 FE is a must. At the moment, every other foldable player in the market barring Google (and Tecno, we'll just have to see whether the Tecno Phantom V2 is better or not when it launches in a month or two's time) has an undeniably better product, in all critical areas.

Ouifuf, 08 Aug 2024"As a pioneer of the foldable smartphone" You... moreAgreed. Bought Xiaomi Fold 4 from China for 800 euro for 1TB version, with free 100w adapter, free headphones/case. The staff was kind enough to help applying screen protector and installed Google services. Samsung Fold is way over priced in Euro, for almost 2000euro, no free accessories and the whole phone feels some plastic and it doesn't process the quality that matches the price tag! Don't even get me started on the selfie camera...

"As a pioneer of the foldable smartphone"

You're so far behind the competition they're about to lap you and you think you're first lmao. Oppo, oneplus, Xiaomi, Huawei, and Honor all have better quality foldables then you, despite you basically being the first one there (not including royale). that's concerning

Foldables are meh. I wanted the holographic computer which Tony Stark used to discover time travel in Avengers End game.
