Manolo G, 16 Aug 2024Rick Osterloh is not a product manager. He is the Senior V... moreLet's clarify my statement for the Bubbles and Squiggles (Android 12+) Fan Club:

There's a phrase for a rare breed of talented inventors, "an engineer's engineer."

Osterloh is not that, regardless of current title and compensation.

Can he build an Android kernel given all of the source and project files? Can he mock up a foldable in Autodesk? Is he optimizing current draw by profiling PMU events? How long would it take him to run TensorFlow on the MNIST dataset without an explicit tutorial? Can he even do hello world in Go or Kotlin? What does he actually know about computational photography, which seems to be Pixel's only strength?

Without knowing his day-to-day, I'd guess he is tasked with 'delivering guidance' or 'maintaining culture' or 'tranforming the organization' or however else Stanford GSB would describe leadership so high-level, it never touches any aspect of the actual product.

Beyond that, when is Ivy Ross going to fall out of love with pastels and curves? It's been a half decade of the same nauseating design language.

Some random netizen summarized Material Design in one sentence: "I can't decide if it's designed for senior citizens or children."

Anonymous, 16 Aug 2024What exactly do you mean by "analog"?48 megapixel Quad Bayer sensors use analog pixel binning in order to make the sensor behave like a 12 megapixel Bayer sensor. It was officially confirmed by Sony that the binning is analog. So as far as I know, this means that charges from the pixels are combined, also called charge binning. Some websites state that Cmos sensors don't offer analog binning, but that's not true. Maybe it was true in the past. It's a common misunderstanding, so analog pixel binning doesn't average digital values from pixels, it isn't downsampling. 4 small pixels are read out as one large pixel and then you get a traditional Bayer array. This reduces the read noise from an object (fewer pixels usually mean less read noise), lets the manufacturer use Bayer demosaicing algorithms and the sensor can be also read out faster, whereas downsampling/resizing an image digitally doesn't really improve the read noise from an object. But the disadvantage of analog binning is that the sensor behaves like a 12 megapixel Bayer sensor (low resolution).

I just looked at the 15x live photo video frames (not Night Sight, not 50 megapixel mode) and the 7 Pro is much, much better here than the 9 Pro XL because the 9 Pro XL uses analog pixel binning. So, when you take a photo of a bird and want to pick a special moment, the 9 Pro XL is much worse than the 7 Pro.

Anonymous, 15 Aug 2024"The only way to disable binning at 15x, 30x was enabl... moreI have written a few more comments in "Google Pixel 9 Pro XL in for review". The 15x zoom results of the 9 Pro XL remind me of the S24 Ultra. They don't look as natural anymore as on the Pixel 8 Pro/7 Pro. When you take a photo of a distant sign, then Pixel 7 Pro/8 Pro don't show wrong numbers/letters in contrast to Samsung and Apple smartphones. But the Pixel 9 Pro XL produces very similar artifacts as the S24 Ultra and can show wrong numbers.

I also noticed that the dng files look significantly worse than the jpgs, when you use the default 12 megapixel mode at 15x in Night Sight mode.
My latest theory: Possibly, now Google combines binned results with non-binned results when you take photos at 10x-30x in the default 12 megapixel mode and uses the binned results as the basis. Possibly, they don't know what to output as dng file when they combine binned results with non-binned results and simply decided to use the binned results (low resolution dng files).
Though my theory doesn't work for the 2x zoom setting, which does output 12 megapixel dng files.

Anyways, I would agree in saying that Apple does make the best of the big 3 "global" phone makers, Samsung, Google and Apple. People act like Google is truly global cus they sell in the US, their availability is worse than Xiaomi.

Samsung has poor cameras but good everything else, Google has good cameras (only for photography) and poor everything else. Apple's cameras are good at least and other stuff is on par with Samsung.

I want to add that allegedly, the periscope camera uses the same sensor as the selfie camera and according to Google, the sensor of the selfie camera has dual pixel autofocus. But the official specs don't mention dual pixel autofocus/Octa PD for the tele camera. Google's blog only says: "the new 48MP 5x telephoto lens has an upgraded sensor that improves autofocus"

So it's really a mystery what is going on here.

I wonder whether this has to do with the new sensor of the periscope camera. Allegedly, the periscope camera uses a Sony sensor in contrast to Pixel 7 Pro, 8 Pro. It is not clear whether it is a Dual Pixel autofocus Sony sensor or a Quad Pixel autofocus Sony sensor. If it is a Quad Pixel autofocus sensor, then it is possible that Google needs a new demosaicing algorithm and Quad Pixel autofocus sensors could lead to worse sharpness due to a lower number of microlenses. Or maybe the issue is Sony? The last time Google used a periscope camera with a Sony sensor was allegedly the Pixel 6 Pro, which had the same issue. Maybe Samsung sensors include better remosaicing by default and Google can't handle Sony's remosaicing? Though I would have thought that Google uses their own remosaicing/demosaicing algorithms. Even when I used the 50 megapixel mode (which disabled binning), a photo of a distant sign looked worse than the 15x result of my 7 Pro.
