I said that 110mm in the exif data of a 10x or 30x Pixel 8 Pro photo means that analog binning was used. Otherwise, Google states 221mm in the exif data of a 10x, 30x Pixel 8 Pro photo. This is also consistent with the resolution of the dng files, which have a much lower resolution when analog binning is used at 10x, 30x.

I just tried the Pixel 9 Pro XL camera in a store (the light conditions were decent/good) and I am shocked!

My Pixel 7 Pro clearly outperforms the 9 Pro XL at 360mm(15x) + Night Sight. A 720mm crop from a 360mm Pixel 7 Pro photo also clearly outperforms a 30x Pixel 9 Pro XL photo.

The default 12 megapixel mode always seems to use analog binning at 10x, 30x! So, the dng files have a very low resolution at 10x. That's not how the Pixel 7 Pro/8 Pro behaved, that's how the Pixel 6 Pro behaved! There is also a 30x sample image from The Verge, where the Exif data confirms that there was analog binning despite perfect light conditions (on Pixel 8 Pro and Pixel 7 Pro, the Exif data of a 30x photo states approximately 221mm(8 Pro) or 233mm(7 Pro) when binning wasn't used and 110mm(8 Pro) or 117mm(7 Pro) when analog binning was used. The exif data of the 9 Pro XL 30x image stated 110mm).

The only way to disable binning at 15x, 30x was enabling the 50 megapixel mode.
Surprisingly, this issue didn't exist at 2x.

It's not clear whether this is a bug or intended behavior.
Google's specs state "optical quality at 0.5x, 1x, 2x, 5x, 10x" and this would be a lie, if they always use analog binning in the "12 megapixel mode" at 10x.

If the battery life is on a par with the S24 and iPhone 15 Pro Max then I'm sold.

          Too optimistic?

            Insane prices.

me, who's going for the smaller phones, the 9 Pro would be definetaly an option, BUT:

              - it just looks like S22...S24, and iPhones. BORING!
              - with ugly colors (really, who thought that from the millions of colors, these 4 colors are the best choice?)
              - is unavailable in my region
              - costs the same as Samsung/iPhone. why would I choose Pixel instead of Samsung/iPhone for the same money? I don't see any added value or uniquenes or anything compared to those

Samsung pays Corning a certain extra to have exclusivity for a certain amount of time. Since the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max are rumoured to get an anti-reflective protective glass from Corning, it would make sense if it's kept exclusive to Samsung until some point next year.

Regarding my previous comment: I want to add that the Pixel 7 Pro doesn't support full resolution photos at 5x, it only supports full resolution photos at 10x.

Note that the periscope camera is again not equivalent to 120mm (5x) because the focal length is 17.906mm. Google uses a crop(smaller sensor area) at 120mm.
The Pixel 7 Pro offered approximately 46.0 megapixel at 120mm.
The Pixel 8 Pro offered approximately 41.3 megapixel at 120mm.
The Pixel 9 Pro XL offers approximately 40.9 megapixel at 120mm.

Even if a phone can do nuclear fusion at a $100 pricetag, I will still refuse to buy if it lacks an SD card slot and 3.5mm jack.

Note that the new 42 megapixel 17mm selfie camera likely doesn't capture more light per time from your face than the previous selfie camera, if the pixel size is 0.7 micrometer (not confirmed by Google). Possibly even slightly less light per time from your face. The total amount of captured light is larger, but only due to the light from the additional field of view.

contemplating whether I should go for the 9pXL or the 9pFold.

Currently, the preorder offer is twice the storage for the 9pXL only here in Denmark. But the telco Im eyeing is also giving some discount so I can get the 9pXL with 256gb for 999$ and the p9Fold for 1100$. And then If I trade in my xperia 1V I get even better prices. 9pXL 256gb for 525$ or the Fold for 730$.

Just hard to decide which one to go for. The Fold has a smaller battery and a different camera setup - the 9pXL has never camera and a bigger battery.

                                  This is incredibly unexciting.

While I could put up with the soc downgrade, going from a Snapdragon flagship, I could never go back to a phone that doesnt have gorilla glass armor. They shouldnt have skimped on that.
