Most of its innards are Samsung or Sony anyway, so why is it so much heaver than the S24's 167g (~16% diff). Surely it can't all be the battery, that really doesn't need to last 7 years; these days, how many people are likely to keep it more than 3 before moving to a new phone?)...

Anonymous, 15 Aug 2024Gsmarena, you should compare the Pixel 9 Pro XL with the Pi... moreI just looked again at the photos I took with the Pixel 9 Pro XL in the store. The 15x zoom jpgs remind me very much of the S24 Ultra. I wonder whether Google bought Samsung's algorithms. This would be ridiculous because the 7 Pro/8 Pro have better algorithms at 15x than the S24 Ultra. The 15x images don't look as natural anymore as on the Pixel 7 Pro or Pixel 8 Pro. They now have nearly exactly the same artifacts that the S24 Ultra has. For example, in contrast to Apple and Samsung phones, Pixel 7 Pro and Pixel 8 Pro basically never show wrong numbers/letters, when you take a photo of a distant sign. The Pixel 9 Pro XL behaves more like the S24 Ultra and also shows wrong numbers when you take a photo of a distant sign and the letters can have a strange shape.

Not worth the money. That shiny frame looks more like an iPhone now too. Why did you do that Google?? You're not Apple and your phone's shouldn't cost as much.

Man I just need to see the battery life numbers from your standardized test. That will tell me what I need to know.

Pumpino, 15 Aug 2024220g is heavy, but it's a large phone. How are the sma... moreYeah, it's a little on the heavy side alright. The only android phone I can think of the compare against the pixel 9 pro that has very similar hardware specs (apart from the processor) would be the Xiaomi 14. That has a 6.3" screen similar camera sensor sizes (just slightly smaller for the telephoto and ultrawide) and a 4,610mAh battery versus 4,700mAh on the Pixel 9 pro. The glass version of the Xiaomi 14 is 193g so it's 6g lighter than the Pixel 9 pro. That's not a very big difference though and I kind of thought that both could be lighter but I guess things like the glass build, metal frame, bigger camera sensors, and wireless charging all add to the weight. The s24 is much lighter than both but it has a smaller battery and is a smaller phoner with a smaller screen. Next year I think we might either see lighter phones or similar weight phones with a much bigger batter due to many companies adopting the silicon carbon batteries. Vivo for example will launch a 6.3" phone in the x200 series so hopefully there will be more choices.

Pumpino, 15 Aug 2024220g is heavy, but it's a large phone. How are the sma... moreIf u think its heave just don't buy it.. there lot of options you can pick 🤣

Anonymous, 16 Aug 2024And regarding video: The 7 Pro (and I think the 8 Pro, too)... more"The 7 Pro (and I think the 8 Pro, too) has the issue that it always uses pixel binning at 10x, 30x when you record a video in video mode."
Correction: I wanted to write 10x, 20x. Only in photo mode you can record a video at 30x.

Just saw these at BB. They didn't have the fold on display. I was told it was due to low demand from the first model. The watch 3 looks nice.

Anonymous, 15 Aug 2024Gsmarena, you should compare the Pixel 9 Pro XL with the Pi... moreAnd regarding video: The 7 Pro (and I think the 8 Pro, too) has the issue that it always uses pixel binning at 10x, 30x when you record a video in video mode. But when you record a video at 30x in photo mode, then the result is much better because video recordings in photo mode don't use analog pixel binning in decent light conditions.

I can confirm that the 50 megapixel mode of the Pixel 9 Pro XL doesn't support live photos, but I didn't try whether the Pixel 9 Pro XL lets you record a video in the 50 megapixel photo mode. If this isn't the case, then the 30x photo mode video quality is likely much worse than on the 7 Pro/8 Pro due to pixel binning that can't be turned off.

By the way, it seems that Google has reduced the resolution of a live photo 4:3 video frame from 1440*1080 to 1344*1008. Again a bad decision, 1440*1080=1.5 megapixel was already low for a burst shot.

Gsmarena, you should compare the Pixel 9 Pro XL with the Pixel 7 Pro at 15x zoom in the short Night Sight mode.

I compared the 9 Pro XL with the 7 Pro in a store and I am shocked:
The default 12 megapixel mode always uses analog pixel binning at 10x, 30x, no matter which light conditions. That's not how the Pixel 7 Pro/8 Pro behaved, it's the behavior of the Pixel 6 Pro. So the dng files have a very low resolution, the jpgs suffer from sharpening halos and jpgs/dngs don't resolve fine detail as well as the 7 Pro. The difference is more severe when you compare the dng files.
The only way to disable pixel binning on the 9 Pro XL at 10x, 30x is enabling the 50 megapixel mode, surprisingly the 2x mode doesn't have this issue. But the 50 megapixel mode 15x jpgs still look worse than the results of the 7 Pro. The 50 megapixel 15x, 30x dng files look slightly worse than on the 7 Pro, but much worse, when Night Sight was turned on, probably because Google's 50 megapixel mode doesn't seem to support Google's faster Night Sight algorithm, so the exposure time is longer and this leads to more blur.

Google's official specs state optical quality at 2x and 10x. In comparison with the 7 Pro/8 Pro, that's a lie because this time the 10x zoom setting uses a crop from the 12 megapixel mode (analog pixel binning), not from the 50 megapixel mode. That's how the Pixel 6 Pro behaved...

It's a mystery what Google was thinking here.
Again: The pixel binning issue does not seem to be present at 2x, only at 10x-30x. I wonder whether this has to do with the new sensor. 2x relies on the same sensor as previously. But allegedly, the periscope camera now uses a sensor from Sony. It's not known whether Google uses the remosaicing of the sensor manufacturers and it's not known whether the sensor has Quad Pixel autofocus, which could reduce the sharpness due to fewer microlenses. I also wonder whether the new lens (focal length 17.906mm instead of 18.0mm) is worse because even the 50 megapixel 15x, 30x dng files looked slightly worse in comparison with the 7 Pro.

There were no camera updates available, so it was using the latest version.

220g is heavy, but it's a large phone. How are the smaller models 200g though? They're "compact" phones by today's standards and should be no more than 180g.

Also doesnt come with the liability of Ios,so I can actually use the hardware for powerful stuff (like running mario kart 8 deluxe).
