Samsung Galaxy Ring is non-repairable

There’s no way to replace the battery without breaking the device.

Not exactly a good replacement then for wedding and engagement rings

Expected result. I also don't think rings in general will take off as a desirable product any time soon.

SOMAYU, 23 Aug 2024Yeah, I don't think anyone should really be surprised ... moreNot to mention having it water proof since it's on hands. Or demand users to take it off before dealing with ANY water. It makes no sense. Electronics are sealed with layer of epoxy resin.

Yeah, I don't think anyone should really be surprised at this result. Since the ring needs to be as tight fitting and compact as possible, I don't think they could have integrated a seam for easy disassembly without compromising ergonomics.

jiyen235, 23 Aug 2024My question is who even NEEDS this? Just make repairable wa... moreWell, you won't do deep dive; but you won't rest still in the water. So actual water pressure the ring will face will not just be determined by the depth in water, but also how fast you move your hand in water. So basically anyone who plans to swim with a smart ring needs an proper water resistance.

Repairability of such a device is another engineering problem, and we have no data on how much cost would be added to make it repairable while retaining the proper water resistance. The ring as in current state is already quite expensive, and if price goes any up significantly for the sake of repairability, it would be prohibitive to sell.

I agree on the industry's greed and poor repairability in general, though. I hate how hard it is to replace phones and even tablets batteries despite how large they are already. Given their even more restricted form-factors, it's unlikely to see a proper end-user repairability on smart-wearables. Also, sadly, most consumers do not care about that. Until there is a strong demand, those companies are unlikely to create long-term durable repairable products.

Also "being green" is all about creating a positive brand image and complying with the regulations, companies are not likely to seek anything that won't return more profit. So it's either forced regulations or strong customer demand that can make it possible.

I don't know why people buy these, there must be a market for them, but a very gullible one. The same goes for their foldables. I've not seen ANY out in the wild in this country.

CompactPhones5ever, 23 Aug 2024How exactly do you expect to make a ring with 10 ATM waterp... moreMy question is who even NEEDS this? Just make repairable watches or smart bands or something. If this is so difficult to repair, then why make it if you're so "green"? It's super hypocritical. So are TWS sets. Only saw the WF-1000XM5 being repairable based on ifixit and even then it wasn't something that's simple or anything.

If brands want to be green, make batteries cheap and easy to repair. Oh and btw, what's the point of so much water proofing? I'm not going to deep sea diving with my ring on, that'd be just weird. My problem is that they create solutions to problems that don't exist and create problems for solutions that were already there, like repairable batteries and cheaper/easier to get batteries.

And I agree, it isn't Samsung being greedy. It's the whole industry.

Bruh...no one cares, who buys this? it's been tested and the accuracy of the sensors is very bad so why would you buy it? for fashion lol?

Show me a ring with same waterproofing that IS repairable, I will wait. It's not "Samsung being le greedy again", it's simple mechanics.

                                I wouldn't be shocked.
