Xiaomi 15 Ultra again rumored to sport a 200 MP periscope telephoto camera

It's also apparently going to launch earlier than its predecessor.

Moving parts on dedicated cameras are a tried and tested formula so they work, it'd be a huge gamble for manufacturers to try to make a moving variable focal length camera on a phone, especially if the sensor is big because the heat from the sensor and the chip also needs to be handled. It's a huge hassle. And the only other variable zoom alternative was tested by Sony and it's far worse than just having a better zoom cam and then digitally zooming in.

The S23/S22 Ultras with their 10x take far more natural shots and surprisingly, Vivo's 10x is also more natural so I'm sure digital zooming isn't the problem it's the fact that a sensor that's made with digital binning in mind is being pushed to its limits. AFAIK the HP9 was just MADE to be for telephotos and stuff so they surely tweaked the algorithms to make sure that it took great shots after being zoomed in digitally.

What is " upgraded version of the Sony LYT-900"?

Can't find it in the Sony product release catalogue.

I wonder if the quad-camera setup will stay or if that 200MP sensor will be the only telephoto camera, like in the Vivo X100 Ultra. From a technical point of view, having two telephoto cameras at two different focal lengths should help offset the main camera's digital hybrid zoom processing algorithm. But when you have a camera sensor with such a huge resolution, you start to wonder whether having two telephoto cameras is necessary.

I don't know, but real physical optical zoom still makes sense at the end of the day. Remember the decade-old Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom/K Zoom? I'd love to see a modern-day version of them with a modern SoC and a modern camera sensor with modern stabilization and at least 48MP resolution.

Man Xiaomi you don't NEED better cameras, you guys need to fix the quirks in your software on launch day. And if that's too tough then at least fix the videography quirks. I love the video processing but the metering/exposure changes are too drastic. If the videos could be more consistent it'd be banger. And I hope the selfie camera is good this time, a long overdue upgrade.

Anyways I think the only sensor that NEEDS a boost is the UW cam, it's too wide and thus requires a lot more light than other sensors to look good. A 1/2" or larger cam would be splendid.

Oh and please fix the battery, Xiaomi underperforms compared to nearly every other manufacturer at its price bracket. Even Sony is doing great now. No excuses anymore.

Interested in seeing Xiaomi's take on the 200 MP cam tho, I hope it's a different focal length compared to Vivo and there's still a middle ground telephoto to bridge the gap between the super telephoto and main cam. That'd be nearly perfect.

Anonymous, 04 Sep 2024Samsung did. Results are worse than previous 230mm. I don't think so. Most people are not aware that the S23 Ultra uses a lot of machine learning at high zoom factors. I compared them in a store and the S23 Ultra produces much more fake detail than the S24 Ultra.

Anonymous, 04 Sep 2024Samsung did. Results are worse than previous 230mm. Yeah, that's because the optics Samsung used for the 5x telephoto on S24U are nowhere near as good as what the competition used on their respective flagships this year.

X100 Ultra, for instance, resolves a commendable amount of details at 10x and higher magnification settings because the lens is very sharp and the Isocell HP9 has a built-in machine-learning-based remosaicing pipeline to extract a higher level of details.

The 50 MP x5 sensors also allow for a 10x hybrid zoom... If this is confirmed, I prefer Oppo's approach, which could announce a 50 MP 1/2.93" x10 in addition to a 50 MP 1/1.95" x3
