Makes sense for Apple to come out with a cheaper phone. Think about it, the most money earning part of all smartphones aren't the device itself, but the apps that they get commission from each sale. With more consumers using their device, they can earn more from app sales.

Most other low-end Androids are simply phones people use to make calls and send texts, since their hardware makes them unusable for anything else. They just use "Android" as a catch phrase, they could be running as a feature phone and no one would care.
That's what gives Android these low stats, and that's the problem with Android. The software is inconsistently applied, and only a few phones out there really make use of Android as a proper OS.

What a throw-away comment. Samsung as a company is HUGE and highly diversified.
Samsung Electronics (a subsidiary) employs 200k people, Apple as a whole company 80k. Samsung Electronics' 2012 revenue was USD 180 billion, Apple's USD 150 billion. You gotta read things in context.
How many phones does Samsung Electronics release to the market each year vs. Apple?
You can't compare them based on revenue alone.

I wrote. You think having loads of customization options is what I meant by "scaling up" the OS. This is not about having toggles and lots of confusing buttons to push at a UI-level. This is about low-level code that, in Android, prohibits continued development of the OS into something responsive, hardware efficient, and easy to use.
In iOS and Windows, because they are better engineered at a lower-level (the API layers, memory management, and other stuff users can't see), Apple and MS have the opportunity to scale up a desktop-standard OS as hardware improves. Both iOS and WP employ native desktop standards, based on Darwin and NT respectively, using C++ and Objective C. In Android, given its reliance on Java (an ageing, high-level language used in smartphones ten years ago) and the failure of Project Butter last year to make the OS consistently smooth, OEMs are restricted to adding more cores, more RAM, and higher clock speeds in order to match the competition.
Think about it: there are old PCs out there today, with 2GB RAM and old dual core CPUs, that run better than Android phones with the same amount of RAM and ridiculous quad and octa core chips. Clearly something is wrong if a tiny smartphone requires that amount of hardware in order to achieve a fraction of the performance of an older PC.

That's higher than all Android, WP, BB combine.
Other tech company should learn from this god tech.
Something tells me Q4 will be much much bigger with new iPhone ; 75 Million iPhone, 42 Million iPads and 18 Million Laptops.

When I grew out from widgets and customization I realized that the OS is often laggy, the selection of the apps is inferior to the iOS apps and it is more cluttered... The iOS in not perfect but it is very well designed to the minute detail. It simply breathes quality....and the hardware, too.

One word - impressive.
Just as they are about to launch budget end models. It also goes to show you early adopters/tech journo's and enthusiasts sometimes live in their own bubble at times.
I don't think their end of year results will be as good as all other major hardware oem's are feeling squeezed from Chinese handset makers.
