It's not really 42 megapixel. The maximum resolution of the dng file is 10.0 megapixel and it seems that Google always uses analog binning (not to be confused with downsampling) when you use the selfie camera. In other words: The results would be nearly exactly the same, if they used a 10.0 megapixel sensor.

Sometimes, smaller screen can compensate smaller battery.
