With iOS 18, Apple's Activation lock will guard more than the phone OS

I'm not sure if this is a well thought out feature designed to help users, or a well crafted lie designed to prevent people from repairing their devices so that they instead buy new ones.
Knowing Apple, I'd bet on the later.

Just came to read the comments, how much apple fanboy as always, praising these locking features, when in fact only damages the market, specially repair market.
But as we all know, apple only want rich kids to buy they'r devices, so all in line, with this, even if i don't use repair or spare parts, i will keep myself away from the rotten apple.

I don't see why this is a good thing because it would make repairing iPhones way more difficult. Imagine being unable to use a spare part that wasn't from a stolen iPhone but unable to do so because the part is locked by original user who doesn't exist or cannot be contacted anymore.

I think this will definitely make me switch to the iPhone world without a second thought. This feature is years behind schedule and it should have been introduced a decade ago.

If you drop your phone and it punctures throu... moreA better example is probably the iPhone 7 baseband issue where you lose all data communication but otherwise the phone functions flawlessly it’s just one tiny broken chip on the motherboard. Now every part of that phone is locked to the iCloud account on it after it’s sold off :(

Gaia, 13 Sep 2024Tell me you repair iphones with stolen parts without tellin... moreTell me this. If you drop your phone and it punctures through the back glass and cracks the motherboard, what do you do when you when every other component is locked now? You now have a $300 screen that you could have sold on eBay but now its treated the same as a stolen part by Apple.

Anonymous, 13 Sep 2024This is the most dystopian BS I have ever read in my life..... moreWell this article is straight clickbait and I fell for it. Upon further investigation you can swap parts all you want on an iPhone making reparability the easiest thing ever now. It is literally only stolen parts that will be an issue, I am A-Ok with that! I no longer have to fear replacing a screen or battery at the local strip mall forever setting off a non-genuine apple part message every time I restart my iPhone, I can simply just fix my own iPhone without Apples Genius bar having to do it!

This is the most dystopian BS I have ever read in my life.. I had to stop my side hustle of repairing broken iPhones for profit when the iPhone 8 came out because of more serialized components and now we are onto locking every single component of an iPhone to an iCloud account. I take back everything I have said about the EU vs Apple, EU NEEDS TO CRUSH APPLE.
