            Check Geekerwan review of 8 gen 2 youtube, he explained how adding more middle cores helped android getting better battery life.

            Also that single core is used for burst perfomance, when browsing anything be it your home screen or internet you may encounter heavy script so for 1 or 2 seconds your big core will work at full speed to achieve that single core perfomance so your phone won't lag. That's why OS like android which was called lagDroid nowadays you have smooth experience.
