Epic Games is suing Google and Samsung for gatekeeping access to third-party app stores

01 October 2024
The new antitrust lawsuit alleges a coordinated effort between Google and Samsung to undermine third-party app stores via Samsung’s “Auto Blocker” setting.

Features like sideloading should be "opt-in" by default, because overwhelming majority of users don't know what they're getting themselves into with so many malware-infested apks on the internet. Anyone who really wants to sideload won't find auto-blocker a deterrence. I mean, Samsung actually also included how to disable it in the pop-up message. It's just like the grave warnings and countdowns that Xiaomi gives when enabling certain security features such as accessibility. They never deterred me, because I knew what I want and what I was doing.

It seems epic loves law suits

I love Microsoft's Smartscreen implementation. They give you a warning and tell you that its unverified and harmful so do it at your own risk. You can accept or decline.
That is the right way to do it. I also love the fact that if you set Microsoft Defender to hard settings, it will not even let you download unverified software, and will delete it automatically.

How will its usage increase if there are deliberate roadblocks put in place by Google and Samsung and Epic doesn't try to get people to use its store? Your argument doesn't make sense. It's like saying don't study because you will fail in exam anyway.

Epic Games are nothing more than a bunch of whiny, hypocritical phonies who want all the money for themselves, they're not the saviors they like to view themselves as. They completely missed the point of the Auto Blocker feature, which was intended to prevent downloads of suspicious or otherwise dangerous APK files, which are now running rampant in the digital world.

If they really cared about consumers, then why are they forcing mobile and PC gamers to use their crappy and featureless Epic Games Store just to play their games? Fortnite would earn astronomically more money if they published it on a platform like Play Store that virtually every Android user uses, instead of a third-party app store that barely anyone uses.

Companies like samsung never make so many steps to ensure quality and security.

... It's always Epic games. Maybe they're not so Epic after all.

Villains fighting villains, because we have no heroes in the tech world.

Epic needs to grow up. They already got their W from Apple, why do they need another one?

Its actually 6 inluding scrolling. Where the fk did they get the 20+ steps from ?

Epic are just suing for the sake of suing now. If I wanted to install a third party app store on my phone, I just need to press allow a few times. The apple lawsuit was fair because Apple fully banned third party stores, this is too much

                              What a catfight. Grow up.

Atmo, 01 Oct 2024There's literally no one to cheer for here. On the one... moreIt's ironic to see Epic get mad over Google/Samsung's UI when they tried so hard to fight the claims that they themselves are implementing "UI Dark Patterns" in Fortnite.

If users are too lazy to adjust a UI pop up, then maybe users are too lazy to avoid getting addicted to video game micro-transactions. 😂

The difference between "Auto Blocker" & Microsoft's "SmartScreen" pop up is that the latter actually gives you the ability to run the file & there is a way for publishers to get the "Verified" green check mark.

There's literally no one to cheer for here. On the one hand, more control over our devices is great, but on the other hand... Epic is literally one of the most anti-consumer companies on this planet.
