Samsung Galaxy A16 5G announced with record-breaking software support

Although improving the software support for budget devices (a thing that you don't see often or not at all with other brands) you can ask yourself if the hardware is going to stretch that far knowing that apps en OS'es become more demanding after each update. Just as for the promise done by Pixel it just seems more like a marketing trick than a real attempt to have devices running longer than the current average. Also, as long as you don't have an easy way to change or repair items in your phone it doesn't make sense. You battery will be dead after 2-3 years (or barely usable) and possibly also other components. So the new buzz words are AI and Software Support but both are empty, meaningless and useless things if it's not supported by the hardware or if the added value for people is close to nothing.

Knowing midrange Galaxy phones, they slow-down big time after 2 major upgrades not because of bad software upgrade but because of increased complexity and Samsung usually use underpowered SoCs relative to that of their competitors at the same pricepoint.
Cortex-A78/A76 + A55 + dual-core Mali G68 after 2 years from now would be hell slow. They should have atleast use cortex-a715 + a510 + Mali G615 (6 cores) similar to Dimensity 8300 Ultra of Poco X6 Pro. This will guarantee enough performance after 3 to 6 years.
The hardware performance is not even guaranteed to be sufficient for 2 years. The 6 years promise is more of a marketing ploy.

Anonymous, 07 Oct 2024Samsung is absolutely the worst at milking brand name and g... moreI guess you got A22 4G instead of A22 5G? Despite what the name suggest, difference between these two phone is way more than a mere 5G, dimensity 700 is tiers above Helios G80 in both CPU and GPU compartment.
It is not surprising G80 struggle in 2024, as for dimensity 700, it's rebrand are still getting push out to new budget phones.

I doubt this would be able to handle 6 android updates, even A3 series lag after 3 android update let alone A1 series

It's so annoying that people complain about this. Yes it does nto have the greatest specs but so what, it is a cheap phone. The fact that something this cheap will be supported for years is great, since it forces others to copy it to be competitive.

well, for someone who needs a backup phone or just a smartphone for basic functions it's a pretty good deal

Why do you think the phone will not survive 6 years? I am still using a phone cheap one from march 2017, that is 7.5 years. It has 3 GB Ram and is ok for browsing and navigation. That is definitely a good move for Samsung. I may get one for myself.

Snapdragon 695 hater, 07 Oct 2024What I love about the comments section on GSMA is that when... moreI'm surprised it only has 4gb of ram, I got a A15 earlier this year and it had 6gb of ram and 128gb of storage. It's not bad at all, for basic calling and light gaming. Though i don't tend to use my phone for heavy games. As well as with the A15 there is the nice 90hz Amoled screen. I'm surprised the A16 doesn't seem to get an Amoled.

A bigger screen thus a bigger and heavier fone is in my books definitely not an upgrade. My hands are certainly not growing nor is my pockets. So please I don't know your trolling for larger fones but definitely not for me

Anonymous, 07 Oct 2024Samsung is absolutely the worst at milking brand name and g... moreEven my ultra low end, A14 5G, that I mainly use for a home phone replacement has no problem playing Youtube Music in the background.
Although, because of the long timeframe for security and software updates, I might pick up an A16 5G to replace it. When it is offered here in the US. Since I don't plan to replace that phone every year, like I do with my Galaxy S phone.
