Weekly poll: will you buy the Samsung Galaxy A16 5G? Will you use it for 6 years?

13 October 2024
This is the first entry-level phone to offer this level of longevity. However, will an entry level 2024 phone be able to keep up with software in 2030?

I don't buy phones with "Virtual Proximity Sensing".

I'm now on year 4 of this A51 5g. The only reason I would replace it would be for something with a smaller one handed / pocketable size. Or if this battery continues to degrade.

Would consider A16 to replace it, as a basic user. This supposed mid range I have now does all I need it to. However, if other brands had the required bands to run on my carrier's network I would consider all of them over Samsung regardless of update schedule.

a lot of phones has IP54 rating 3.5mm headphone jack so why removing it?! entry phone means spending less so ceritanlly I won't buy it simply because there is no 3.5mm jack. I bought 2 a 14 because both my parents really like Samsung reliability but they really hated losing 3.5mm jack so they didn't get A34.
your most successful A52s had IP67 rating yet still me & my friends got it exacatly because of that.

You should also buy it when the price goes down for 1.5 years under $100. But ended up you sell your A16 with others.

Selling with a second hand is not that ideal, specially you want second hand S23U or the succesor ones

I will buy it based on the six software updates 😏😏

i'm not a hacker nor enthusiast but way better if it has unlocked bootloader after warranty and bypass charging. otherwise, i dont find value with a support of 6 years

My Poco F6 is considered upper mid-range model, and I don't think I will receive monthly security updates on it.
So, I think Samsung does a good job with their phones, at least on the software support.

Only the Z, S, and A5x get monthly.

Blame it on Google who didn't require OEM to have monthly security patches. Google only require quarterly for 2 years to get certification.

I was excited about this phone, but the A15 might end up being the better choice. The A16 has almost the same hardware and lost the headphone jack; the six-year updates are a way to obscure the lack of improvement. Also, the price will be more.

This is a good phone for older people like my parents as they only use whatsapp and facebook and never install anything on their phone, so the performance should remain the same unless the updates will reduce the performance somehow...Currently my parents still use Vivo with SD 450...which is ancient

gG, 13 Oct 2024Your 6 yo SoC on S9+ is on par with both 1330 and 6300 on a... moreThis is the most relevant comment on this thread.

Flagship SOC is pretty much guaranteed to become midrange in 3,4 years and entry level in 5, 6 years. Entry level is barely enough to get by in year zero, getting worse with every year after that.

Also, SOC isn't the only factor here - storage and memory both play a crucial part in phone usability, and A16 lacks either.

No, I won't buy it. For one, I already have A52s, which is better (IMHO). Besides that, this phone has crappy cameras (looking at tech specs), no headphone jack, and, most importantly for a 6 year long device lifecycle - I can't easily swap out the battery. A must-have feature if you plan to use a phone for 6 years.

                                      I'll wait till 2027.

This phone will last 3.5 years tops.
