Anonymous, 14 Oct 2024Remember when mini phones were actually mini? 😔✊That time the normal phones were also mini if we look phones past 5 years how large these are now. And even then the mini phones were only flagship hardware and expensive top end.

And this one is not even a mini with 6.31 inch screen that will be bigger then standard iPhone or Samsung S class.

Probably close to the size of Xiaomi 14 with 6.36inch screen

They actually tried it with the mini.

Sure the term "mini" is subjective, but in the current market a Pixel 9 sized phone is smaller than most.

Anonymous, 14 Oct 2024Sensor 70% smaller will not have better iso performance. ... moreDynamic range of a sensor is heavily affected by an overall circuit design. lyt-818 is the first Sony sensor for a mobile application that can read out an image and 3 conversion gain settings then combines them improve dynamic range substantially. It's a feature IMX989 in X100 Pro completely lacked. You should go read Sony's release document for this sensor since you can easily find one online.

The new sensor uses the new 22nm lithography, why is this important? Because this implies circuit generates less heat, which is the primary source of shot noise, and more efficient conversion of photons to electron signals would reduce read noise as well.

Canon EOS RP has a full frame sensor that is 4x larger than the micro four third sensor in Panasonic GH6. Yet the former falls apart much quicker when you try to edit raw files in post because RP's older sensor has a terrible dynamic range. Sensor design plays a major role just as much as sensor size itself.

Anonymous, 14 Oct 2024It is 1/1.6". True dng ( no NR nor sharpening on it ... moreIn reality iPhone 16's sensor is still below iPhone 16 Pro when comparing noise at the same ISO settings. The double layer transistor tech of Exmor T helps reducing noise a bit but it improves the highlight retention the most when shooting in high contrast scene as it increases full well capacity of each pixel, but this is not very relevant in low light.

The effectiveness of the new tech also comes down to implementation. Xperia 1 VI suffers in low light compared to Find X6 Pro from last year because Sony's post processing is so primitive to the point where they have to rely on slower shutter speed to minimize noise as much as they can. No fancy AI noise reduction to magically sweep the noise while retaining details.

Anonymous, 14 Oct 2024Sensor 70% smaller will not have better iso performance. ... moreYou have no idea what noise is, lol.

Noise is created inside the sensor. When you have a sensor made from an improved process, i.e. 22nm vs 40nm, noise will decrease. It has nothing to do with sensor size.

A new APSC sensor can definitely have less noise than an ancient full frame sensor.

It is like saying APSC at iso 6400 can give cleaner files than full frame at iso 3200.
                      This does not exist.

Imx818 is probably just 707 at new litography. Same way done to 989 to lyt900.

To give lower noise at higher iso, semsor needs to increase sensitivity to light.
Exmor RS is not gonna double it while reducing size.

You judge sensor power by looking at jpeg. 🤦🏻‍♂️

Metal gymnastics here is too extreme to defend a brand.

The imx903 ( exmor T 1/1.14") was supposed to be used by 16 pro duo. Nobody knows why. I suppose sony semicon is not able now to make the amount apple needs.

Anonymous, 14 Oct 2024Let's start. Only thing he says is about exposure wh... morelyt-818 has a dynamic range of 86db, which is far greater than IMX989's 60.2db (=10EV), and even surpasses lyt-900's 84.3lb value. Also according to Sony Semicon:

'By developing a new, highly efficient circuit for converting photodiode charges into voltage, SSS has significantly reduced random noise (RN), achieving an RN of 0.95e-, the lowest of any of its CMOS sensors for mobile applications.'

Looks like Vivo is testing water with a smaller but highly advanced sensor and waiting for the tech to roll down to a larger sensor when they will be able to use it for Ultra or X300 series.
