This should result in better quality shots.

Anonymous, 24 Oct 2024Here comes the weirdo giving weird excuses, using unnoticea... moreIt's not unnoticeable. All these 9a rumors are about how noticable it is the camera bar isn't there. It's really reductive to think that more is always better. You want more mps? How many? 128? 256? 512? 1028? Nobody needs that. The whole thing was just a pissing contest between phone makers in the first place.

I really disliked the camera bar. I don't care if the camera is less mp if the camera bar is gone. Nobody needs 64mp anyway. I don't need to see every pore on someone's face or every spec of dust. You can't even upload 64mp as most websites reduce it. I hope this is a return to the budget a-series.

But what about that Pixel Fold and Pixel 9 Pro Fold - use the same module as the Pixel 7a and 8a - Sony IMX 787? They just did a reduction in the final picture resolution in the Fold and 9 Pro Fold, and they do the same in 9a. lol.
        Also, Pixel 7a and 8a can't catch 64 MP full-resolution pictures. So...

              You say:

              48 MP, f/1.7, 25mm (wide), 1/2.0", 0.8µm, dual pixel PDAF, OIS
              is better than
              64 MP (16 MP eff.), f/1.9, 26mm (wide), 1/1.73", 0.8µm, dual pixel PDAF, OIS ?

              No way.

Slowly going back to the legend: IMX363.

All I care about are dimensions, is it going back to Pixel 4a or at least Pixel 8 dimensions or using new tablet dimensions?

                      Pixel 9a (late 2024): smaller 1/2.0 Sensor

Good to see that nothing has improved over the past decade and a half.

Wesker, 23 Oct 2024Might come from the fold but stil some mid-range hardware. I have found 48MP 1/2 Sensors inside 2020 Budget phones like the Moto G10 and E7+

Bot at F/1.7 and we got an E7+ for our Grandma at 89€ in 2021

a mid range camera sensor today is 1/1.52 and upper mid range 1/1.28

Downgrade in camera and modem chip and you'll pay more.

                              This is superb

The device it's coming from may be expensive, but the sensor itself is smaller than he one on the main camera of the 8a, so it's a downgrade. Having said that, the lens is slightly brighter (f1.7 vs f1.9 previously), which should compensate for the smaller sensor size to some extent.

                                      Whoa...this is some spin...

As others have correctly pointed out, the sensor is a definite downgrade. I had a feeling this was coming though, given the renders. A flat back (without a camera island) meant that you couldn't fit a large sensor. Pixel 8a main sensor has a focal length of 5.43mm whereas the corresponding number for Pixel 9 Pro Fold is 4.53mm. so you need 0.9mm lesser thickness to fit the sensor and would be able to fit in a 8.5-9mm thick body.

As far as the image quality is concerned, looking at the DXOMARK scores for Google Pixel Fold (1st gen) and Pixel 7a (same difference in sensors, both powered by Tensor G2), the scores are only slightly lower. Therefore, I think the camera performance of 9a will be similar to 8a since better computational photography due to better chipset should compensate for the downgrade in sensor.

But I really hope this means that Google is not looking to hike the price of 'A' series as they did with vanilla models. Otherwise this downgrade will be completely unjustified and the 'A' series would be in a worse position than it already is.
