Indonesia bans sale and use of iPhone 16 series

28 October 2024
The ban is a direct result of Apple's unmet investment commitments in the country.

It seems GSMArena gave wrong information. Indonesia only bans sales, but allows usage (by buying from other country with paying extra tax).

I'm convinced all of these self-hating Indonesians are either:

There is no way a TRUE Indonesian would defend Apple in this case since they simply want to exploit emerging market without giving back.

Hell, if you really know what's the problem instead of spouting nonsense you'll know that Apple is trying to skirt taxation, so not only they fail to commit on creating jobs for the locals they also didn't want to pay taxes.
Analogy: You opened a shop but didn't want to pay rent and hire locals (which is agreed in the contract).

As far as I know, only Samsung and Asus own their manufacture in Indonesia.

This regulation is enforced by the blocking of unregistered IMEI numbers on these devices. While users can still operate international smartphones using foreign SIM cards, local Indonesian SIM cards will not function unless the device has been registered through the appropriate channels. Visitors who bring their devices into the country must navigate the registration process via Customs, or coordinate with the Ministry of Telecommunications. This process may incur various taxes and fees.

Significantly, the second point implies that individuals can indeed purchase the iPhone 16 abroad and subsequently register its IMEI upon arrival in Indonesia, provided they pay the requisite duties and taxes. This registration will yield official tax documentation, confirming that the import duties have been duly settled."
