Indonesia bans sale and use of iPhone 16 series

28 October 2024
The ban is a direct result of Apple's unmet investment commitments in the country.

So, the government really wants Apple to build factory as more advantages to local employees. But, i disagree with the government's hope because of controversial about political things.

Hope they should gave a good chance for Apple after deal issue was solved.

potato4k, 8 hours agoSo many readers here are not even well informed. Firstly, ... moreActually, Apple's target is not on the spending power of the people but the minor few as well as its dumb but rich 'neighbour'.

In fact, this daring move is a good move by their govt against 'superpower' companies like Apple. But the main thing is Apple still commands a large consumer base as they specifically targeted non-smart users (thus the iPhone 16 series exists.....with just a camera button difference) as u can still see ppl still flocking to buy them, no matter how much intellect they have.

Let's hope more steps up like the Indonesian Govt did here.

Why do you think Apple set up like three Apple stores in the tiny island Singapore?

So many readers here are not even well informed.
Firstly, Apple doesn't have an iPhone factory. The one that's making Apple iPhones is Foxconn. So moaning and whining for Apple to build a factory is useless, because Apple doesn't make their own iPhones. That question should be asked to Foxconn.

Meanwhile, Samsung, Oppo, et al do have factories of their own. As such they simply comply by having a factory in the country.

It's the same story with India. India has similar regulatory hurdles in a form of import tariffs, to encourage companies to build factories locally. In India's case, Foxconn does have a factory there, so Apple could simply come in with their official presence as a store. This is also because Apple sees India's potential.

As for Indonesia, Apple doesn't care about the country. Despite the massive population, their actual buying power of the general population is very weak, and it's going weaker YoY. Add on the constantly changing regulations and top to bottom corruption. Besides, Apple can easily service their rich Indonesian fans through Apple stores in Singapore and Malaysia. Apple's target market are affluent enough to easily fly there to get their Apple fix.

Is Apple being cheap? Well, they didn't become trillion dollar company by being nice. Apple knows what it's doing.

Honestly, no big deal tbh. Indonesia is not a big growing market as India or China. You cant win them all.

Indonesian govt. requires us to register our IMEI to Customs ("Bea Cukai" in Indonesian) when bringing the device as handcarry with maximum of 2 devices at a time. It can be done only with our tickets and in someday after you arrived (based on your tickets).
What's not legal is selling iPhone 16 series and Apple Watch 10 series as an authorized seller.
If you're traveling to Indonesia from aboard, you can register your device IMEI to get network access for a certain time. If you're not registering yours, you won't be able to get any cellular signal and have to use WiFi.

And Indonesian system isn't blacklisting, but it uses whitelist. Once yours are registered, you're in. Otherwise, you simply just won't get any cellular signal.
