The phones are priced the same, however.

Buying a pixel phone is only a good choice if you flash graphene os on it. Assuming graphene os is actually safe and private. And with samsung getting worse and worse, maybe a pixel 9 pro is actually better than a vanilla s24.

No, don’t tell people that. Don’t you know that big bad apple makes the worst and by far the cheapest phones and then sells them for more money than anyone else? Didn’t you get the memo that apple and only apple is the worst thing this side of 20th century dictators?

How are people here supposed to cope with information that another phone is cheaper to make than iPhone? You’re ruining people’s whole worldview…

The iPhone's chipset is estimated to cost $135, The Pixel's SoC is $80.

Paying for what you get Benchmarks, Camera EVERYTHING is the same ratio Apple 135 to Google 80.
If I had to purchase myself a second phone, even though I am 100% Android I would buy an Apple iPhone any day over a Google Pixel. that is how far short the pixel is from being a "Flagship" comparable to the Android flagships I am dedicated to

And no, Apple can't afford to do that, they have too much demand comparatively to have that power.

jiyen235, 06 Nov 2024Google has a small demand, so they have less places to go t... more'Economies of scale' is applied in context of production efficiency from the manufacturer's perspective, i.e. the per unit cost of an item goes down as the number of units produced goes up (primarily because of the fixed costs getting distributed over larger number of units).

What you seem to be alluding to is referred to 'second degree price discrimination' in management parlance, or simply 'bulk discount'. That is, bigger orders are usually cheaper.

And in context of sourcing from multiple suppliers, you have it exactly the opposite way. Sourcing from multiple suppliers gives more market power to the consumer (Apple in this case), as they can easily change the order size or change suppliers entirely, and therefore can use this leverage to negotiate better prices from the suppliers.

Thus, both the factors, i.e. larger order size as well as diverse supplier base works in favour of Apple to reduce prices. Ceteris Paribus, Apple should be able to source the same panel at cheaper rate compared to Google from a third-party supplier.

I am questioning the methodology of estimating this $110 number itself. Another analyst has the cost of display panel of iPhone 16 Pro Max as $80 only. Now the question is, which one is correct?

Wait a minute... the Pixel has a much lower BoM than the iPhone, yet they both cost the same? I can only assume that Google spends a lot on marketing. For such BoM, I'd say it should be about $799.
