The iPhone 17 Slim and Galaxy S25 Slim both run into the same issues

11 November 2024
There are two major hurdles to making a phone thinner and both Apple and Samsung had to deal with them.

Heff-YO, 16 Nov 2024Wow this has to be one of the dumbest "phone tech inno... moreMy theory for why phone companies want to make phones thinner is because phones have become so boring lately. I think the reason we keep getting these new design trends every 5 or so years is because people are creative and want to find new ways to express themselves. And while buying stuff isn’t the healthiest way to express this creativity, tech companies know that it gives people a reason to buy their products in a time where improvements are becoming more incremental. But the good news is that tech, just like fashion, is cyclical, and as a fellow small phone enjoyer, I can only hope that we start seeing 5.8 inch screens again by the time the iPhone 22 comes out. Until then, I think it’s important that we push for improvements that persist across design cycles, like increased repairability. That way, once the trends shift again, we won’t have to compromise on design or functionality.

Wow this has to be one of the dumbest "phone tech innovations" I've ever read. Why do we need a phone that is around 1.7mm thinner than what's available? The battery life will only be worse, cooling will be worse. What happened to the soft concept of a "compact" phone. How about something in between the mini and regular iPhone with good battery life. The Mini was too small, but if the concept was a bit bigger with a better battery, well that makes sense. These phones are stupid. Clearly both companies have hit a wall on innovation and aren't listening to minority's to come up with something new. A COMPACT PHONE. Hello??! Earth to any phone company! I don't care about 1.7mm thinner. How goddamn stupid.

Chidoro50, 13 Nov 2024You assume a company like Vivo had any internal testing on ... moreYet they don't have explosive note 7 or bending iphone. Also samsung green line issue persist until now among their amoled flagship and apple has been known to change material that is prone to dent every several generation including the newest so called titanium coating...

7.6" is the thinnest I can comfortably handle; my current iPhone 12 mini is 7.4" and it's harder than it should be to pick up off a desk or similar. Not sure who put into the heads of Apple and Samsung that customers are looking for thineer phones, especially when the battery life is almost certainly going to suffer because of it.

Anonymous, 11 Nov 2024They should ask Vivo how they did it a few years ago.You assume a company like Vivo had any internal testing on any of the ‘innovative’ nonsense they push out. Apple and Samsung aren’t QC simpletons

Anonymous, 12 Nov 2024The boxy design with flat panels makes the phone less vulne... moreIf you mean it in the "toughness" sense, that's a common misconception. Because devices like A30 are still built like tanks. Maybe GG Victus makes a difference.

But if you just mean grip, well, that depends on the person, their hands, and how they hold the phone. I have very large hands, and despite that, I never had accidental touches with my A50. And no matter how I hold the phone, boxy design is worse to hold than the curved back.

Anonymous, 12 Nov 2024Sony made the boxy design first. Neither Apple or not SamsungI said popularized, can you read?

I want manufacturers to make smartphones lighter, 200g in your pocket is very uncomfortable. 150 to 160 gms is manageable lesser than that can be called light.

DaFink, 12 Nov 2024Is slimmer actually what consumers are crying out for 🤔Nope. It's the weight. Users complain that the current smartphones are heavy. Especially with obese people. They claim. That whenever they put their phones on the pocket of their pants. The weight of the phone pulls the pants down. Revealing the Smiley Underwear.

And I agree with them since I'm wearing Gartered Shorts. My Current Smartphone is the Galaxy S23 Ultra and the Iphone 12 Pro Max. Two phones placed on each side pulls my pants down. And if you're wandering why not get a bag. I don't use a bag at home.

What end user benefits by shaving off 1.Xmm from currently thin devices...

WHAT is appealing about either model....Smh

I remember when tech was fresh and new. These phones are lol....

whenever they fit any size camera module flush with back side just like under display camera in front then we can have truly slim phone like glass sheet with touch buttons on frame.

This is the most fabricated "innovation" in mobile ever. These are just phones. They're nothing new. I know gadget blogs have a compulsive need to fill the feed 24/7, but can we please stop trying to hype this as groundbreaking or hard science? They're phones using physically smaller batteries, allowing them to make the phones thinner than their current models.

We had the thin phone craze already.
Literally no one is asking for a thinner smartphone.
If they can't figure out what to do with that extra phone just take it off the market and put the money somewhere else. Three new iPhones and five new Samsung halo phones a year is enough.
But hey, what do I know.
