LG's improved stretchable display can be pulled from 12" to 18"

12 November 2024
LG demonstrated a car dashboard prototype in which buttons and dials "grow" out of the display.

Honestly 20 years ago we had a D televisions. It was cool thing on a first sight but drowned like a titanic in next 5 years because eye damage and watching via 3D glasses causes difficualities. There were many else problems.
    In other words not good.
I am curious flip and fold screens survived this long because just like curved TVs with size of 50 inch plus are horrible and useless.
    My question still stands.
Who needs this, asked for this and will it get usefull???
Folds and flips from regular tablets or bar phones arent very popular because main screen durability is better to say queestionable and you cant put real screen protector.
And fixing such screen is difficult and very costly.

Royole did almost the same demo as in that video, back in IFA 2018. Lol, technology never fails at recycling.

Very cool technology from a purely technological point of view.

I do have my concerns about whether it's actually that practicable for use as car controls. On the one hand it does look like it could resolve the huge problem that touchscreen dashboards have - where having no tactile feedback means you have to (dangerously) shift your attention to the screen for basic functions like adjusting AC. Being able to stretch some physical "button" like controls that you can at least feel your way around and maybe get haptic feedback from without looking would be hugely beneficial.

On the other hand: one of the big reasons car makers switched to touchscreen controls was because of how much cheaper they are to put in compared to having to manufacture and assemble buttons and knobs. So I do wonder if the flexibility of a stretchy display wouldn't still run into that challenge of manufacturing custom profiles for it to stretch over to the point where it's still more practicable to just go with buttons and knobs..

TCL recently acquired LG Display. We'll see how they utilize this technology.

                screenslaver!!

That looks awesome, now alot of new cars (in the future) might come with extendable screens instead of having 2 large screens which create some blind spots, you can have a big screen that extends only when needed so you will be able to drive without having an extra blind spot

Tbh first I thought this is a complete waste of R&D but the examples for foldables and as keyboards really opened my eyes for the idea. Way better than the usual "clothing" or "car exterior" examples.

Unless someone like to replace whole console with fancy screen for 10K when it will break, and IT WILL break probably after 3 years(as today everything is build and made to last 3 years...)

Also If it would be good for blind people.... why you would need screen? Just use voice control that right now is pretty good in most of cases...
