Royole did almost the same demo as in that video, back in IFA 2018. Lol, technology never fails at recycling.

Very cool technology from a purely technological point of view.
I do have my concerns about whether it's actually that practicable for use as car controls. On the one hand it does look like it could resolve the huge problem that touchscreen dashboards have - where having no tactile feedback means you have to (dangerously) shift your attention to the screen for basic functions like adjusting AC. Being able to stretch some physical "button" like controls that you can at least feel your way around and maybe get haptic feedback from without looking would be hugely beneficial.
On the other hand: one of the big reasons car makers switched to touchscreen controls was because of how much cheaper they are to put in compared to having to manufacture and assemble buttons and knobs. So I do wonder if the flexibility of a stretchy display wouldn't still run into that challenge of manufacturing custom profiles for it to stretch over to the point where it's still more practicable to just go with buttons and knobs..

TCL recently acquired LG Display. We'll see how they utilize this technology.

That looks awesome, now alot of new cars (in the future) might come with extendable screens instead of having 2 large screens which create some blind spots, you can have a big screen that extends only when needed so you will be able to drive without having an extra blind spot

Tbh first I thought this is a complete waste of R&D but the examples for foldables and as keyboards really opened my eyes for the idea. Way better than the usual "clothing" or "car exterior" examples.

Smithravi, 13 Nov 2024Maybe it will help car users who don't need to look at... moreBut it is mechanical riser for that button under it, so why not just put real button on the side? Unless someone like to replace whole console with fancy screen for 10K when it will break, and IT WILL break probably after 3 years(as today everything is build and made to last 3 years...)
Also If it would be good for blind people.... why you would need screen? Just use voice control that right now is pretty good in most of cases...

Akinaro, 13 Nov 2024Its all really cool... but in that demo video, what is the ... moreNow you can feel the button.
On a car console for example the muscle memory will guide you to the button and once you feel it you can act it without catching your view from the road.

I also wonder what would've happened. Part of me thinks they would've Apple-ified too, as much as I hate to believe it.

Akinaro, 13 Nov 2024Its all really cool... but in that demo video, what is the ... moreThere are a lot of applications where it could be nice to operate a device without looking at it constantly. Not only for those with reduced lacking vision.
In the car example, pressing virtual buttons, can be done while keeping the eyes on the road.
And especially if you can have a tactile feeling of pressing, e.g. if it is lifted by air or liquid. Or if fixed positions, a click mat like simple calculators or some remote controls use.

"Wouldn’t it be cool to have an on-screen QWERTY keyboard with actual buttons?"
It would be awsome! Especially combined with folding to protect it. We could then finally say goodbye to the very few available phones with a real keyboard, that can be operated without constantly looking at the display!
