potato4k, 20 Nov 2024Keep dreaming. Apple won’t bother setting up shop in Indone... moreIf Indonesia was an unimportant market, they would have probably left Indonesia the moment they found out that the iPhone 16 was banned here and wouldn't spend a "small portion" of their money to invest in an "unimportant" country.
But ironically, they did. I mean, it's pretty obvious, considering Indonesia is the country with the largest iPhone users in SEA, even though ranking wise they're still on the 4th place.

If it's economical, you wouldn't need to force anyone to invest. The companies will come voluntarily without you reminding them to come.
Apple's reluctance indicates that the sales figure doesn't justify the investment asked by Indonesians.

Is this from Apple's statem... moreApple cant sell their iPhone 16 series because they dont have the necessary permits (Their TKDN permit has expired prior to the iPhone 16 launch). So, unless they renew those permits, they cant sell their future devices in Indonesia

So the point is to convince Foxconn to build the factory. Case in point, India. But Foxconn wouldn’t bother doing that in Indonesia.

Other brand did open their factory in Indonesia to be able to sell their products there. Apple didn't, but instead they offer other things but failed to meet the expectation. It is not a good look for Indonesia if it still allow Apple to do business as usual as it's undermining the other brands efforts.

nowadays smartphone assembly line 50~70% is done by robotic machine, not only less failure, it can work efficiently and faster too
most of parts/hardware (mainboard, display, camera etc.) are imported anyways
how many job opportunities needed ? probably less than 1000 person enough, if only for domestic market
for me, its looks more about steady tax income from apple, rather than job opportunities for indonesian

1st, promise, not commit?
Is this from Apple's statement or GSM arena typo?
If it's a promise, then there is no guarantee (promises can be broken).
It it's a commitment, then the government can hold Apple accountable.
2nd, Apple could weasel their way out of this. Keep in mind "Could".
Apple will just skip the 16 and jump to the 17 next year (assuming Indonesia does not ban the 17 next year).
Also, Apple opened factories in India and Vietnam. That is on top of their existing factories in China.
Apple can shell out the cash (they have the money), but will Apple shell out the cash (that is the question)?

potato4k, 20 Nov 2024Dude, Foxconn wouldn’t bother building up a factory in Indo... moreIndonesia remains more important in terms of sales from the 3 countries. Apple established an Official store in the country because it was given tax convenience. And if Apple also establishes an Official store in Indonesia, Apple's sales in those 3 countries will decrease drastically. Because many importers from Indonesia take iphones from the country.

Besides, the rich Indonesians buy their iPhones from Singapore. Why do you think Apple built like 3 retail stores in that tiny island while none in the big country?
