Images from the Mate 70 series should offer a noticeable step up in color accuracy.

Fan, 21 Nov 2024I think Apple and Google are afraid of Huawei. That's ... moreyou mean "illusionary" right?

Honor don't seems independent see at X60 pro teasers which was released oct 10 same phone design like mate 70 also teasers had the same colors and same position, it's not a coincidence huawei copying a budget model.

Aierlan, 21 Nov 2024LEICA authentic doesn't look natural at all in my opin... morei mean contrast is just a taste thing and i get it, not for everyone. Vignetting, yeah wish it were a toggle but i really like it.

But the thing is, Huawei's photos have this artificial look. For example, everything is "perfect". By that I mean, the exposure, highlights and shadows are all "perfect", they're processed extremely clinically. Usually what happens is that, due to this the photos aren't blown out in any way or don't have the proper hues that the original scene had. Take a look at ben sin's Pixel 9 Pro XL vs X200 Pro review. The X200 Pro takes more natural shots, even though it's far more artificial looking than the X100 Pro/Ultra.

So yeah, it's twofold, the exposure or highlight/shadow handling and the sharpening. Everything is balanced in the shot, the camera/sensor didn't take it, the processing did the heavy lifting and that's why it looks so lifeless compared to an actual dedicated camera HDR shot. Additionally, the sharpening is too much. They have some sort of an AI sharpening/detail retrieval pass after the normal sharpening pass. The first sharpening pass is already slightly over the limit of oversharpening at most instances and then the AI sharpening/detail adding pass just makes whatever detail there is look more unnatural, but there is indeed more detail.

I remember some guy here defending dxomark and Huawei/Google and how the detail looks exactly like how it'd look with the dxomark AI tool. That further reinforced my thoughts.

So yeah, my main point is that, the sensor doesn't take those photos, it's processed clinically and loses whatever soul the original shot had. These photos look obviously from phones, not from cameras. Actual cameras have blown out highlights and looser sharpening. I'm not saying Huawei should let go of this processing, im just saying a different mode would be better. Xiaomi's Leica Authentic has supremely natural detail and a dslr-esque exposure/highlight handling. The Vivo Zeiss natural modes have really nice colors but are still oversaturated at points, even then, that is probably the most natural/ "take scene as is" kind of phone imo, not Huawei.

If Vivo's HDR and sharpening were less aggressive/controllable properly, then their phones'd have been the swiss army knives of mobile photography.

Again, im not saying HDR-ified dxomark-point-scoring shots are bad by themselves, they have their place. But a natural-esque shot has more soul and looks better to me. We have big enough sensors now to not need such aggressive processing all the time and having the choice to switch to a more natural look is the way to go now.

Oh and about the excessive contrast on the Xiaomi ultras. I think you either used an old xiaomi model or there weren't updates cus i saw a lot of samples from yt'ers like The Tech Phenomena and Through Jermaine's Lens and the photos improved a lot after updates and everything is a lot better on the 14 Ultra. Or maybe your is just a fringe case, i don't know. Whatever the case, what you're describing seems like an anomaly more than the rule. The Tech Phenomena takes photos in extremely challenging conditions and the Xiaomi still handles stuff in normal photo mode good enough.

Seems like they can capture different shades of red accurately.

Red was and still is difficult to capture on Huawei phones.. From the beginning of P9 era.

Huawei should just focus on making cellphone parts to sell to other phone manufacturers rather than making phones. Sony makes more money selling camera sensors than selling phones.

I think Apple and Google are afraid of Huawei. That's the reason Huawei is getting banned. These guys are really thinking out of the box and providing real upgrades to customers with value for money. Whereas Apple, Samsung and Google are only making evolutionary upgrades to their phones.

jiyen235, 21 Nov 2024if only Huawei's shots were more natural.... a Xiaomi-... moreLEICA authentic doesn't look natural at all in my opinion. Heavy contrast, vignetting and colours don't really look natural at all. For example, I've tried many of Xiaomi's phones with Leica authentic and indoors blue jeans in some scenarios become almost black due to the strong contrast. This was especially the case on earlier LEICA models but they have toned the contrast down a bit at least on more recent models.

if only Huawei's shots were more natural.... a Xiaomi-esque Leica Authentic mode would pay huge dividends but i understand why Huawei goes for the artificial dxomark look, normies love it.
