Akinaro, 22 Nov 2024Imagine if that law would be moved to cars...
"I dont... moreIn your analogy, it would have made some iota of sense if you called the browser the full fledged car (the engine+crankshaft+suspension+et al being the internal mechanisms like Chrome API, extensions, JS, CSS, PHP, etc.) which the user does not need to bother with as long as the car just works.
Google search is the extra add-on trailer filled with unwashed peeping toms that does NOT need to be bundled in with the car for it to function. Google tracking (location, cookies, scripts, user profiling) is the heap of manure that you have dumped above the sunroof that does NOT need to be bundled in with the car for it to function. The car can function without a trailer, poo on the roof, bumper stickers, pine fresh air freshener and all of that extra junk.
Are you getting my point Megamind? Were you confused or just clueless on how chrome and google search + profiling actually works?

"I dont like buying New Ford car and their engines, I want use toyota engine inside! Lets call government to remove that monopoly on Ford cars!"
I hate chrome, its one of worst browsers, but lets put some logic on it... chrome is google product, they kinda have right to use google product on google browser.
If that would be other browser... yeah, new computers... yeah... but here?

I don't know about safer, but I definitely agree with your better claim. Chrome has gotten better since then, but Samsung Internet, IMHO, is still better.

I don't even like Apple. I don't mean that lightning was better but that type C is not reliable. Point is to havw something much stronger than both lightning and type-c.
Idk how to convey exactly what I mean. But type c is less flimsy compared to micro usb but still flimsier at the plug part itself compared to lightning.
Again, lightning is not a preferred connector for me.

403 Forbidden, 22 Nov 202410 years using USB-C dan never experienced any damage, even... moreYes the cables fail but port and plug haven't for me. I usually braid my charging cables with nylon or parachord at the endst to reduce bending and stress. I have a 7 year old USB A to C 3.0 cable from Anker that is perfect with this reinforcement but the type c end often gets loose and I have to crimo it with flat pliers every 3 or 4 weeks to keep it tight. I doesn't come out of the port, the connection feels secure but the phones randomly arop charging while fully plugged in.
And no these are power power socket issues or adapter issues since I have moved about 11 times within these past year, used a variety of adapters from OnePlus, Nokia, Lenovo, Xiaomi and Apple. USB-C is just plain bad design.

mae.emery, 21 Nov 2024Android is one the few things Google does right. Who knows ... moreNahh not really, Android is open source, but there are so much component inside it that relies on Google's closed-source system.
GPS is one of the example. It relies much on Google Play Services, which is closed source. You can use GPS on Android without Google Play Services.
Not to mention the locked bootloader scheme, where when you unlock it, you messed up much things. Your Widevine level is downgraded to L3, banking apps are no longer working etc etc.
I wouldn't say that it will so much better under any other companies (maybe it will be better under non-profits company I guess), but for now, it's been bad under Google management)

6 years of using iPhone and I need at least 1 cable per 6 months, since it didn't lasts long at all. And yep it's the official cable from Apple.

57th minute in the 11th hour, but better late than never and at least start somewhere and take it from there.
That said, if the DOJ carries on with this plan after January 2025, I would be truly surprised. Shocked even.
Oh and Alphabet need to get rid of that parasite at the top of their heads. That person is running google into the ground and will still get a golden parachute out of the mess he created at the end of the day, even after all of his street staining.

tu, 22 Nov 2024market share above 25%A monopoly (from Greek μόνος, mónos, 'single, alone' and πωλεῖν, pōleîn, 'to sell'), as described by Irving Fisher, is a market with the "absence of competition", creating a situation where a specific person or enterprise is the only supplier of a particular thing. (Source: Wikipedia, as I'm too lazy to translate the definition in my book)
If there were no other search engines, yes, that would be a monopoly. But we have Bing, DuckDuckGo, Yahoo, Yandex or Seznam, and that's just the ones I can think of right now. Yes, I know that it's not THAT simple, but IMO Google does not meet the definition of monopoly.
Dude, market share above 25% would mean Apple would have to go, too. And I mean like... Blow them up. With dynamite. They're somewhere above 50% in the US, go and nuke their butts, DOJ. Do it now.

If they forced Google to divest from Android then Apple also has to remove themselves from IOS. Apple has a greater share of the US market and should be held to the same scrutiny.

I use the Brave browser with Brave own search engine. It works perfectly, it's faster than Chrome, it's more private than Chrome because Brave doesn't track you and blocks other trackers. Brave also blocks all the ads which means that you can watch YouTube on it without ads for free.
Chrome is trash.

dont you all find it funny, when a browser is gaining mass market share, they are accused of monopolizing. Then we have Apple dominating the US market, and none of the so-called monopoly laws apply.

well, finally? I mean geez, Chrome is literally today's IE. it is force pre-installed on Android, and cannot be un-installed by user. Finally some scrutiny going on.
I have yet met anyone other than nerds that don't use Chrome. Regular Windows, Android, Mac, iPhone users I've met all use Chrome. Apple enforcing Safari engine on iOS is literally the only thing holding Chrome from utter mobile dominance (and the ruin of web standard).
