A 2TB M.2 NVME SSD like the Kingston has a Read Speeds of 3,500MB/s. And a Write Speed of 2,800MB/s. Is cheaper. The most expensive is the Sabrent Rocket 8TB M.2 NVME SSD.
The bottleneck is not the controller between the device & the SD-card. But the limitation of the technology that we currently have regarding SD CARD readers.

Also there can be workarounds like loading game assets onto ram so there will be less access on the sd card.

Anyway, for the sake of argument, there is no way that it can compete with the successor to the Nintendo Switch. As a handheld console, it won't have an Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc drive, which means that it won't support physical games. Many million people buy physical console games. If you have 30 PS5 physical games, they won't work on this device. Will you be okay with that? Also, obviously you won't be able to play an Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc drive on it. If Sony wants to release a handheld consoles, there are two difficult options: a handheld console that doesn't support PS5 games but its own games or a Sony Switch. Either of these options will change the business model of Sony significantly and is risky.

"Dead on arrival" seems a bit extreme, since PlayStation has had more users in the console space, and if you don't count PC gaming handhelds, it seems to still be the case, considering PlayStation 4 and 5 combined, both still on the market currently, have stayed beyond Nintendo Switch sales.
Now, would I buy one of these handhelds, if indeed Sony made such a thing? ...Maybe. It depends on several things, including if it's reasonably priced. To be fair, I can't honestly predict that Sony won't do something stupid along the way that causes its early demise, or that it will do better than PC handhelds. It may not even be done at all! All we can do is wait.

Sure with the same spec PS5 is cheaper than a PC. But at the same time, you're just stuck with games from Sony. While on the PC you got wayyyyy more titles, even including the one from Sony. Lemme ask you something. If I give one of those things for free, which one do you choose: a PS5 or a PC with the similar spec as PS5.
Since PC has just more titles PS5, even with the same price it's just doesn't makes sense to get a handheld PS5 instead of a SteamOS/Windows-based console (well, except if you're a Sony fanboy, ofc).

I know exclusive titles matter, but Android and iOS both would have skyrocketed in gaming by then, if the present trends are anything to go by.
I think they should aim for a unified approach. Make a PS6 Portable, and launch it alongwith PS6 base. PS6 base console can have extended cooling and huge graphics power, supporting 4K120 (or 8K48) probably, and 6.1 audio.
PS6 portable can be limited to FullHD/2K at 90 fps for the same games as the base PS6, audio being stereo. This should do it.

Switch 2 will come with compatibility with previous games..and those are pretty much all that were released in past 10 years for all consoles and generations.
Steam deck has their own customer base, which don't care of all the rest since they are sitting on huge libraries..
Sony? They are sitting on angry customers from ps Vita times with no recent games and only trying to milk with remasters of remastered remastered games..
