Does Everybody ensure that they don't place it besides the coins on their pockets?
Are you certain that the majority of people around the world don't place their phones on top of the dashboard?
Are you certain that people won't accidentally bend their Foldable on the other way? Especially when drunk?
A phone that pass Zack's torture test is ensured that you'll be getting a phone that you won't regret.

RaviSS, 04 Dec 2024If it is inherently an unviable or impractical technology, ... moreI've seen technologies come and go. And I've seen technologies that were abandoned because the manufacturer doesn't care because they want to copy. I'm a victim of those abandoned technologies. Wasted like $5,000. And for what? I won't be able to use them on latest smartphone?
Here's what you should know in regards to foldable displays. Batteries are mounted on one side of the phone. While the Other only provides display and sound. Unfold it and it turns into a tablet. Using the large display consumes a lot of batteries.
Having a triple display when unfolded consumes more than the two-fold phone. And since the battery capacity of foldables is only below 6,000mah. You'll be only using the tri-fold for 3 hours at most.
Which is why. It is better to own a phone and a tablet.

I am puzzled what kind of solution Samsung will use. I hope they will not make the same mistake of having a plastic oled screen serve as the outer screen as well, just as huawei did.

Narazumono, 05 Dec 2024More useless gimmicky plastic wasteFor current squarish foldable phones, I agree with it. But for tri-fold, it's far from a gimmick. This is the right step towards pocketable tablet with real tablet aspect ratio, especially for those who don't own multiple devices.

By the time Samsung launch their tri-fold foldable phone in 2026, it gives Huawei a chance to make a second-gen successor with improved screen mechanism. Only time will tell.

And a foil-able version of it will never be as good as the one that has been designed to do just that. And, oh yes, my bad, you'll be able to use it as a phone as well but you might need to reinforce your trouser or jacket pockets it you don't want to lose it after a while.

RaviSS, 04 Dec 2024If it is inherently an unviable or impractical technology, ... moreI feel like they will always be a premium phone no matter what, and I guess if IPhone does one it will sure become more mainstream and maybe the price will drop not significantly. What I have noticed with people is that for some of them price doesn't matter even if they don't have the money. Take for example ultra expensive brands of clothing that doesn't provide better quality for the price tag, but people buy it for the label. I feel like foldables will be somewhat of the same thing, where 50% will buy it for the features and the other just for being a foldable.

off topic but i despise the idea he was an actual inventor.

Foxtrot2Novmbr, 04 Dec 2024And there's a reason why technologies like tri-fold do... moreIf it is inherently an unviable or impractical technology, it will slowly die a natural death. But the issues you are referring to are majorly those which are associated with any new drastic innovation. It is only when a certain threshold is reached that economies of scale kicks in and costs start going down.

I feel the folding display technology is at a nascent stage, and it is too early to say whether it will or will not have a long life. If it is unviable and fails, okay. If it works out, great. But I am happy to see new things being tried out, rather than be like 'let's just walk, who needs a wheel, too much work'.

The only tests that make sense are the bend test (even then a phone shouldn't be bending and it also depends on how much force he uses) and the test on the foldables with all the dirt and stuff.

Personally I like PhoneBuff's tests more. It's just limited to drop resistance but at least it's more scientific.
