Google Pixels got 80% battery charge limit and battery bypass with the latest update

12 December 2024
Google didn't advertise it, but you can now limit the battery to charging to 80% to extend its life. This also enables battery bypass when plugged into external power.

Having bypass charging is great because that is usually only available on gaming phones. And it means when the phone is too old for normal use there are other things it can do like being used as a clock or for folding without wearing out the battery.

Wait, I thought 80% battery charge limit was a basic feature on any phone.

80% charge limit is one of the greatest features that I want in every smartphone from every company. It is a basic necessary feature.

My old Redmi doesn't have this feature, I often charge it only up to 90%. This feature should be on every phone.

Never understood why anyone would just charge to 80% to prolong your battery life. You paid enough money, charge to 100% and if you one day have to buy a new battery, so be it.

Anton .el PAPI., 12 Dec 2024things that could well have been there since the day these ... morePlanned obsolescence has been informing several decisions for phone manufacturers for past several years. In terms of battery, this objective was achieved with the combination of non-replaceable battery, fast charging and no option to limit charging.

It is only during the past year or so, we are seeing 'non-obsolescence' as an emerging competitive dimension. Larger support cycles are an indicator of the same. Features such as charging limit, bypass charging are also getting increased attention, and I am sure other manufacturers will follow suit.

Kudos to Google to take the lead in this aspect (especially longer update cycles).

things that could well have been there since the day these phones were launched, but who knows why they omit these functions and then present them as a great novelty
