My 2018 galaxy s9 had variable aperture f1.5-2.4. It was a niche feature that i always set as auto. I didn't had a use case to manually change it as an average user.

There could be 3 reasons to close down an aparture:
1: too shallow DOF causing parts of an image unintentionally get out of focus
2: be able to use slower shutter speeds
3: have a better sharpness
so is it useful?
1: main sensors are reasonably big nowadays also apartures are wide, but so are the FOVs. Even wide open the DOF is never as shallow that it ruins a picture.
2: The sensors have fast readout so shutter speeds are not limiting bright light photography. 3: todays camera lens have an amazing quality and even at those wide apartures they are almost perfect edge-to-edge
so as there are no upsides, there is the downside of a price increasing feature which also adds a moving part that's suspectable to failure

Anonymous, 23 Dec 2024Fans will defend them by saying Apple takes their time to i... moredon't you think both can be true? the latter is indeed 70-80% of the truth but the former i'd say still can make sense.
Although the "Apple quality" is no longer there anymore so i can understand why people will say the former isn't true, for example Apple's depth mapping used to be great due to the lidar scanner but now chinese phones MOG apple and also AI features are absolutely better on androids.

Then make it f1.8 and f8! The rest between is just a waste of time. F1.8 and f4 is little to no difference on mobile photos. F8 at least gives the star effect on lights and cover the most of the subjects in focus.

Nicktech, 24 Dec 2024Until they think 60hz as a standard for iphone number serie... moreStarting with iPhone 17 from roadmap rumours given by Ross Young, all iPhone numbers series, regardless that are either vanilla, Air, or Pro series, will feature 120Hz ProMotion LTPO OLED. Considering the roadmap of Ross Young were correct starting with iPhone 13 series throughout iPhone 16, safe to say, this is will continue.

Next year would focus on the 17 Air and the under display FaceID sensor on the 17 Pro. Apple likes to trickle down features drip by drip to maximize marketing. 18 Pro would then get this new camera.
