Weekly poll: which was your favorite flagship of 2024?

05 January 2025
It was a great year with new models pushing the boundaries of performance and design - which is your top pick for the year?

Sort by:

Based on paper, my vote goes to the X200 pro mini. Would've loved it Vivo released it globally.

Why the mini? It's easy to pack in the latest and greatest into a big phone. Restricting the volume creates innovation as it's more challenging to make.

I voted "you missed my favourite flagship" but you didn't. You simply didn't put in an option for "I didn't like any flagship in 2024" which would have been my vote.

They were all oversized featureless garbage. So none of them deserved my vote.

        My votes:

        Flagship:
        - Sony Xperia 1 VI
You gotta own one to appreciate it. The truest of blacks and bokeh that this phone's camera produces is so good. All images are rendered in a DSLR-like color science. Everything else is perfect except for sometimes the highlights are blown. I don't exactly know why.

        Horizontal Foldable:
        - Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold
I own the OG Pixel Fold and even though they say that its cameras are not on par with the candybar Pros of Pixels, its cameras are still monsters. The quality is awesome. The Astrophotography is unrivaled. Also owned a Pixel 6a and damn that lil' one can teach them big guys a thing or two when it comes to image processing.
The ownly downside of this phone will be of course the Tensor Chip as seen by benchmarks BUT can't be felt that much as you use the phone.

        Flip Foldables:
        - Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6
There's no doubt about this one. The software support is unquestioned. The cameras are actually good. I've owned a Z Flip 4 as well and I can tell you that its cameras won't let you down so I'm expecting that this 6th gen should deliver the same.

Year 2024 is the year where smartphones were all just about refinements from their predecessors. I believe they already reached their peak as evidenced by what the 2024 flagships have served on our plates. Midrange phones are getting closer to flagships more than ever as well because of the lack of innovation in the big boys. Foldables I belive are the future but they're all still fragile devices and the prices seems to be an issue still. Phone brands like Tecno and Infinix brings us closer to them but durability and longevity of software support are the things to consider.

Year 2025 might be a 2024 version 2.0 when it comes to smartphones innovation unless maybe Apple's Foldable iPhone came into fruitition. For sure other companies might follow or who knows.

2024 is the year where only one smartphone stands out for me as the one who truly brings innovation to the table in terms of the flavor of curiosity, it's the Huawei Mate XT Ultimate.

Anyway, I currently own a Samsung S10 5G, Sony XPERIA 1 VI, and an iPhone 15 Pro.

P.S. I miss my Google Pixel Fold and Pixel 7 Pro for their Astrophotography and Night Sight features

Imagine choosing the iPhone;upon all the numerous amounts of much superior Androids available 🤣😂😆😆

Price difference here between some models is huge.
Best for your money - Realme GT 7 Pro and ZTE Nubia Red Magic 10 pro.
Best software and camera - Google Pixel 9 XL
Best gaming/performance phone - Asus ROG 9 pro
Nicest phone ( for me ) and best speakers -Sony Xperia 1 VI
            Most unique - Huawei Mate 70 Pro+
Most popular - Samsung s24 ultra and iphone 16 pro max
Every smartphone from this list is great, everything depends of the taste, needs, money which u have or are willing to spend and of availability.

Pixel 9 pro xl and moto edge 50 ultra are noticeable flagships.

I might agree with the zoom camera though - as much as I love the 3.5x-7.1x zoom capability, 12MP 1/3.5" just won't cut it. Sony should give a 50MP resolution for this year's Xperia 1 VII. Putting an LYT-500 sensor for the telephoto camera would be a great start.

As for the pricing, it depends on where you live. Here in Malaysia, it's not more expensive than its equivalent rivals. In fact, the Xperia 1 VI over here costs the same as the Galaxy S24 Ultra, iPhone 16 Pro Max, and Pixel 9 Pro XL, all with 256GB internal storage.

Asus rog phone 8 pro and Red magic 9 pro

The Xperia 1 vi simply because of the hardware features would have been the perfect All-round android if it wasn't for Sony's bare bone software and bad zoom quality. On the plus side it's got one of, if not the best speakers out there and expandable storage on top of 512gb. The real problem though is Sony's pricing

The Sony Xperia 1 VI has always been my favourite flagship phone of 2024. I love that Sony can manage a 3.5x-7.1x continuous zoom range in a periscope telephoto camera. Also, Sony still has the real common sense to keep the still-relevant 3.5mm audio jack and microSD card slot on phones, so that's an easy win for me. That said, the Xiaomi 14 Ultra is close behind, not least because of its Photography Kit. I am considering voting for the Vivo X200 Pro and Oppo Find X8 Pro, but I'm more interested to see what Vivo and Oppo will do with the X200 Ultra and Find X8 Ultra in 2025.

As for foldable flip phones, I like the Honor Magic V Flip because of its huge battery capacity (thanks in no small part to silicon carbide technology) and the Huawei Pocket 2 for still keeping the NM card slot. But neither phone is available globally outside China, so it's a miss for me. If Samsung gave wired DeX capability in the Z Flip6, that would easily be my favourite foldable flip phone of 2024. But since Samsung didn't, I don't see anything wrong with sticking to the 2023 Z Flip5.

Take the S24U for example. If it had the setup of the Xiaomi 14 Ultra, I would've bought it immediately. But nope, not the case.

I can't imagine using a phone without back button, numbers row on keyboard and calculator history (just to name a few). iPhones are the most stupid and backwards tech on the planet.

However, the comments don't reflect reality, as the most popular phones even on GSMarena are never the most advanced. Most people use this site to look up specs and compare phones, they don't comment. Thus you get the A55 and S24 Ultra as the most clicked phones, bit Chinese phones are talked about by 20 people in the comments.

One thing is for sure: on GSMArena, it will be an Android phone from a Chinese manufacturer. The number of China sympathizers here is mind-boggling.
