Without access to the Google Play services and without a cutting edge chipset, the phone's high price tag becomes hard to justify.

I can completely understand why they'd want to protect their own enterprises, but banning others is not the way to do it.

Theyre stifling the competition and ultimately the only real losers are the consumers.

UrwrongLookitup, 06 Jan 202510 EU countries banned Huawei. The US & West are not th... moreGet your facts straight.

The ban on Huawei telecommunications equipment was placed by the Trump administration during their so-called "trade war" with China. Before that, Huawei's telecommunications equipment was used extensively throughout the US with no allegation of spying whatever. There is absolutely no evidence of Huawei equipment being used to spy on anyone. No EU spy agency ever confirmed that Huawei equipment had been used for spying. Britain's GCHQ even audited Huawei telecommunications hardware and found nothing involved with spying. Huawei was the leader in 5G networks and mainly targeted by the US government because they thought the ban may cause China to capitulate in the so-called Trump "trade war".

The US then pressured allies into the Huawei ban on the unfounded allegation that Huawei telecommunication equipment may be used for spying and tried to pressure anyone else that would listen to them.

In respect to Huawei phones, the US ban was placed after Huawei entered into contracts with US carriers to sell their phones. No doubt the ban was placed after intense lobbying by Apple (and most likely Samsung) to keep Huawei phones out of the US. Further sanctions were placed when Huawei started threatening Apple's worldwide sales which cut their access to Google Apps. And when Huawei replaced Apple as the No. 2 seller of smartphones and was about to replace Samsung as No. 1, more sanctions were placed on Huawei which cut their access to TSMC so their could not produce their Kirin chipsets and restricted them from purchasing mobile chipsets with 5G.

And people here seem to think the problem is with Huawei and not with a corrupt US government.

The notion that Huawei was banned because of Apple and Samsung is nonsense. Japan, Taiwan, Vietnam, India, Costa Rica among others phased out or outright banned them. None of it had to do with market pressure or sales. Huawei has done tons of shady stuff and the shouting that google does it too! might mean something if google was owned by the US government like Huawei and Honor

If a smartphone is only then a flagship when it has the fastest SoC, the largest battery, the brightest screen etc, then yes, you are 100% correct.
However, I know quite a few people who just want the best camera experience in a phone and don't care about other technical specifics.
Undoubtedly, Huawei had made name for itself as one of the best cameraphone makers - and they still deliver in this department. Huawei cameras are still among the very best on the market worldwide.
So, there is certainly a number of photo aficionados that represent a niche target group that would pay these high prices even without getting the latest SoC.

Android is an open platform with alternative appstores and microg was developed with the support of the German government as an alternative to GMS. There is no official or unofficial way of installiing apps on an Android phone, despite Google's attempt to lock down Android so that it resembles Apple's walled garden.

Fact is that there are alternative methods of installing Android apps on any Android phone including Huawei phones for those who need them.
