Pedzio, 21 hours agoTo the people who say 7 years of OS updates is overkill, I ... moreI'd say 5 Years of security and 4 years of OS upgrades is perfect. And if the company wants to go out of their way then sure they can fix critical security flaws till 8 years. But it doesn't matter, people will already have a new tablet within 5 years time. I know I will also after 5 years.

potato4k, 17 hours agoMissing the point. The point is OnePlus is charging Apple p... moreYou have to understand none of the companies you think that use high quality parts actually use high quality parts. The only thing high quality in a phone is the processor, Apple or Snapdragon be it. No company will go out and try to give you better components. Literally making iPhone 16 Pro Max costs them around 400 dollars and this is still high, if they wouldn't buy from Samsung the OLED screen, it would be like 250 dollars.

To the people who say 7 years of OS updates is overkill, I do not agree.
I think at least 4 years is necessary and any more will certainly be welcomed.
I remember when i had the Samsung galaxy S4, i prayed for new official software after 3 4 years which i didn't get. And then i came across the beauty of custom roms (and bricked my nephew's note 2)

Samsung famous banana shape blur on most photos or green line on screen proves their quality is sicks.
Same can be said for apple for many various reasons mostly the battery saver switch which is always on since new device. And tons of other apple prebulescent issues.

Any flagship phone with fewer than ... moreAnd why.
Any manufacturer who dont plan to add equal warranty to years of updates is bad manufactuurer and in other words dont trust its own devices.
If Kia can give 7 years of complete warranty for its cars phones can have 7 years of warranty too. No company should be scared of their own technology.

Even 2 are more than enough, Because no company or manufacturer does not gives more years of warranty more updates not needed after 2 years if device breaks for some reason and repair will be very costly better to buy new device.
So unless a company wont give equal warranty in years to years of updates said 2 years of updates are more than enough because if anything happens its cheaper to buy new than fix old. Components regardless of brand gets exhausted and tired soon or later and fixing have no sense because most repairs especially the screen or case your phone gets water damage cost as much as new phone.

Firstly ,4 years of updates is already more than enough.
Secondly ,some people are skeptical about downloading software updates in order to avoid bugs ,crashing or app compatibility issues (the "why fix it if it ain't broke "approach)
Thirdly, not having the latest software does not make the phone useless ,i mean ,tell me any app or game that runs only on Android 13 and above?

But after android 11. I can't even play the games that I wanted. Worst part? It keeps crashing. Now that android 15 update is fast approaching. I'm thinking if I should stay on android 14.

Phone that still have ongoing software support retain more value than a phone which has reached EOL. Thinking must be so hard for you guys else why are so many people thinking one dimensionally?

Yeah, it was THAT time - any minor improvements via new APIs were completely overshadowed by just instantly doubling your RAM and CPU cores, not to mention core architecture in general.

"We (the only people benefitting from this decision) believe that this is the correct thing to do because some you have more money than others.". Can we just stop trying to justify bad business decisions?
If I'm spending more than $600 on a phone, I am expecting it to last for a really long time - if Samsung is giving me longer term support, why would I go with a company that has just as bad software and not even any better hardware?

OnePlus and the marketplace doesn't get it! Not all of us are on contracts, we buy our phones outright and we need decent trade in/resale values. So OnePlus, 4 years on a £1000 phone is one lousy deal

I remember back in those days wherein getting the latest android version on your phone is a must. Especially if it packs a lot of goodies. New API, better gaming performance, and better app support. Now, I don't see those anymore! It only gets WORST!

Anonymous, 08 Jan 2025Thats why the new 7 OS upgrades policy was the best decisio... moreYeah, I doubt the the current hardware will be able to support all the features of Android 18 or 19, the same way iPhone 11 didn't get all the features of iOS18.
After so many years it's more likely that you will just get the visuals and look & feel of the most recent OS, but not the functionality. Otherwise, I fear it would mean that either the OS has not evolved much, or the phone would likely have performance issues.
