Yeah, it was THAT time - any minor improvements via new APIs were completely overshadowed by just instantly doubling your RAM and CPU cores, not to mention core architecture in general.

"We (the only people benefitting from this decision) believe that this is the correct thing to do because some you have more money than others.". Can we just stop trying to justify bad business decisions?
If I'm spending more than $600 on a phone, I am expecting it to last for a really long time - if Samsung is giving me longer term support, why would I go with a company that has just as bad software and not even any better hardware?

OnePlus and the marketplace doesn't get it! Not all of us are on contracts, we buy our phones outright and we need decent trade in/resale values. So OnePlus, 4 years on a £1000 phone is one lousy deal

I remember back in those days wherein getting the latest android version on your phone is a must. Especially if it packs a lot of goodies. New API, better gaming performance, and better app support. Now, I don't see those anymore! It only gets WORST!

Anonymous, 08 Jan 2025Thats why the new 7 OS upgrades policy was the best decisio... moreYeah, I doubt the the current hardware will be able to support all the features of Android 18 or 19, the same way iPhone 11 didn't get all the features of iOS18.
After so many years it's more likely that you will just get the visuals and look & feel of the most recent OS, but not the functionality. Otherwise, I fear it would mean that either the OS has not evolved much, or the phone would likely have performance issues.

"Most users", meaning they justify this by leaving almost half of their customers with broken and dangerous phones. This is why you don't buy these brands.

4yrs about right for me, but my partner kept her last phone nearly 7yrs (and it ran like a bag of crap). Majority of public are not bothered how many years updates a phone has squedualed. Only obsessed techies love banging on about how "amazing" Google and Samsung are for doing super long software support and anything less than 7yrs is rubbish 🥱. A phone will still work fine even with no updates you know? It's not going to blow up.
Strange people.

I did heard from Czech reviewers about 6 years of Android updates and 7 years of security patches. BTW vivo X200 series goes on sale here starting Friday January 10th.

They won't sell anything in Europe at those prices. No one would risk 1000 Euro just like that to unknown vendor without proper retailer and support chain. And offering last gen for 750 now .... that is a scam, no matter how you look at it..

Pesugihan Ultimate, 08 Jan 2025「most users tend to upgrade their phones within four years」... moreThat statement may not be true here in the US. But it's very true in Asia. Most of my friends and family there changed their phone at least once every three years if not more often.

Anonymous, 08 Jan 2025Apple provides long term software support for their phones ... moreapple phones basically die within 3 years. Unless you're a boomer, you're not gonna put up with it and switch.
Longer updates are most of the time better ways of planned obsolescence

Azu10157, 08 Jan 2025News flash: The iPhone XS/XR and 11 are still supported! Apple provides long term software support for their phones but the updates tend to introduce bugs, kill battery life and slow down the phone. That's why I'm always skeptical about long term software updates and whether companies will provide quality software updates for a 5-7 years old phone.
