22 January 2025
It's the last US carrier to take this step.

Somebody tell me please exactly what will happen? So now I have 2G on my phone settings. And its enabled. When I disable it signal bars drop. So when 2G dies will signal always be low? Thank you.

Stu, 23 Jan 2025Goodbye 2G. Will not miss you because you used give 64kbps... more2G limit is 384 k/bit, not 64

64 is just a limitation providers give after your high speed volume ends.

They will just give the same 64 k/bit limit to 5G then.

          Goodbye 2G.
Will not miss you because you used give 64kbps speed which could not process an email properly nowadays.

Anonymous, 22 Jan 2025I really hope next Chipset from Qualcomm & Mediatek onl... moreDiscontinuation of 2G/3G is more about freeing up the frequency spectrum those older standards used for faster, newer standards

              That's so absurd.
Many places signal would drop to 3G or more so 2G where 4G and 5G just don't have the coverage.
              This is going backwards

a lot of somewhat modern phones don't support VoLTE, rip to many cheapo smartphones released until 2019-2020. oh and custom ROMs on Samsung without the buggy open IMS.

More reliable than 4G in UK.. I wish they keep 2/3G incase of massive cyber attack on 4/5G networks.

At least 2G lasted about 34 years here in the States. While 3G came out a decade later and was already shut down half a decade ago.

I can imagine 4G being the new 2G and last at least 30 years and not the 20 years that 3G lasted. I don't believe it will go away with 5G and 6G already out. 4G becomes the minimum standard for mobile data speeds.

Well nowdays all phones should exist and support 5G only and better but since 5G aint everywhere so lets sayG will be supported too mean LTE version.

Anonymous, 22 Jan 2025The whole whitelisting practice should be banned. Any phone... moreThis is due to excessive commercial monopoly granted to major US carriers since the 90's, United States is maybe the sole remaining country in the world where a carrier can impose to its subscriber base handsets and tablets models which can be used on its network.
Take a look at Global variants of Chinese phones and even Samsung phones from other markets: they might not work properly with US sim cards or (worse) banned even they are technically compatible with most of their 4G/5G bands....Absolute nonsense.
Major Canadian carriers like Rogers & Bell are way less restrictive in comparison.

                              Goodbye 2G...

The whole whitelisting practice should be banned. Any phone which conforms to the international 4G and 5G standards should be allowed without any limitations on any carrier. I f the carrier can't do it, it should be stripped of it's mobile license.

I really hope next Chipset from Qualcomm & Mediatek only have 4G & 5G support
They need to delete the 2G & 3G support because 2G & 3G were insecure.
