There's a free Microsoft Office option for Windows now, but it comes with ads

That's not even the only caveat.

The staff at IT departments don't like to deal with Linux issues, because they don't know how to fix them. Of course they can do some research and hopefully find a solution, but UNIX/Linux is so fragmented and wild grown, that it takes a long time to fix trivial issues, that's why they unfortunately opt for Windows.

Just use LibreOffice or literally any of the other free alternatives. MS are holding onto the Office dream not realising that the only reason to use MSO now is just if you like the Microsoft name.

Ami, 26 Feb 2025Libre Office also works on Mac, iOS, Android, chrome. I use... moreNo. Linux breaks after nearly every update. I tried Manjaro, just did not update mirrors after changing them. Toast. That one is an Arch (or a stupid version of it - but I liked the loooks of the Cinnamon version). So it is a bit different. But... Fedora Gnome broke after a major update. Buggy as hell afterwards (not because of GNOME extensions btw). OpenSUSE I even never got to work properly...

That is the experience. Linux people will tell you, that the system just works. And perhaps it does, if you set Mint for your grandma, who will use only the browser. For most though, it is in your way. HDR? Barely and very problematic even on KDE. Software support for peripherals? Well sometimes yes, sometimes no. Sometimes only some freeware crappy versions. Computer games? Yeah, but if you do not want a headache, you should really just stick with Steam.

Long story short, the Linux community is just strange. They start with false promises of stability and ease-of-use. But when it comes to it, it is just about using terminal to do most stuff you need (to install drivers, windows fonts etc.). And using terminal to fix stuff, that wasnt broken just a while ago.

I am no windows defender. Win 12 will most probably be full of ads already. But the thing is, that they can do it just because they know, how much Linux still sucks.

I am already paying money for internet to ISP. Microsoft should charge them. If internet was free then it is logical to pay for software or see ads in it. Pay this, pay that. ENOUGH!
Soon, I am going to cancel my internet too. Because they will increase the price.
Water rains from the sky and humans sell it to other humans. I am tired of everything...

OnlyOffice and LibreOffice for the win. Microsoft is apparently so desperate that they want to hand it out for "free" and shove ads and tracking into it. Yay. Don't fall for it and use the above office suites.

Just Google "massgrave" and be happy lmao.

Or even better, just use LibreOffice or OpenOffice. That one is also available for Linux.

LibreOffice is actually clean and stable. I started using it more than a decade ago. It has matured now, I don't have any problem using it on Windows.

As someone who used to use LibreOffice, I can sadly say that it just isn't as good as the Microsoft Office suite, especially when it comes to more advanced features. Sure, you can read a basic Word document, but I found that images, tables, and other formatting were often broken. Spreadsheets were especially bad, as LibreOffice just didn't have as many advanced functions as Excel. This is going to be great for people who can't necessarily afford Office 365 (the personal pricing is ridiculous) but require 100% compatibility for reading Office produced files.

What's the point in free office If I can't save it locally?!
I'm happy with LibraOffice. It's Free. Opensource AND I can save locally.

Anonymous, 26 Feb 2025Hey Linux vegetable. Your forever-broken OS is used by nobo... moreBecause I'm not a person that uses Linux? The r/linux subreddit on Reddit has 1.4 million users following it, are they not people too? And that's before you think of many other communities online and offline to do with Linux, as well as those not part of any particular community that use it. Linux may not have the market share of Windows, but it's still used by a large number of people. According to Statcounter, Germany has 2% market share for Linux (1.76 million people); India has 1.61% (22.5 million people!); the USA has 1.96% (6.7 million people); China has 0.4% (5.2 million people); Bangladesh has 1.44% (2.5 million people); Russia has 1.72% (2.5 million people); etc. The real figures are likely to be even higher, simply because Linux users are likely to use privacy tools that make it harder to track these kinds of things through digital fingerprinting.

asic paid version withlot of ads which your computer and windows identifies as relevant for you. A medium paid version with some ads lets say one every 15 minutes of use.
And a heavy paid version which will cost like 30 eur a month but you get no ads.
