Kevinv, 25 Mar 2025In the EU, all manufacturers must provide a 2-year warranty... moreYes and no.
In EU everything have 2 years of warranty in rest of the world is one year.
Kia cars for example gives 7 years of warranty.
If company trust its products well enough they dio not hesitate to give 7 years of warranty as a part of their marketing.
Bro you and your wife or friend were lucky your phone last this long but in world is 10 billions of people its not just you three which were lucky.
I mean nothing bad will happens is manufacturer gives more years of warranty. They can call it a marketing and will definitely sell much more devices.
Many people had the experience a week after warranty goes off their phne bricked or worse. If you have a bad luck even something like 1500-2000 eur device can breaks.

But yeah, I'm also that type of people who don't have any problem using a phone with 4-generations behind Android version. Heck, I'm pretty sure that 100% of apps that I use everyday runs just fine on Android 9.

Anonymous, 25 Mar 2025That's a dumb comparison It's a perfectly valid one. Why should PCs enjoy such long-term support while phones barely get that kind of treatment? 5 years isn't even that much to ask for compared to what PCs get to enjoy.

PatrickCzech, 25 Mar 2025Thoose phones barely get 1 year.Yes, they can't even provide security patch, not to mention new android version

justasmile, 25 Mar 20255 years of OS updates? You're definitely kiddingOn a SoC like:
                          - MediaTek Dimensity 8300, 8400, 9200, 9300, 9400
                          - Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, Gen 3, Gen 4, Elite
                          - Samsung Exynos 2400
                          - Apple A15, A16, A17, A18
                          - Google Tensor G3 and G4

That doesn't have to be a problem at all, those are almost all high-end and mid-range phones.

Cpt.Power, 25 Mar 2025 years of updates is useless of your warranty is only one o... moreIn the EU, all manufacturers must provide a 2-year warranty. I think it's nonsense that warranty is more important than updates.

My iPhone lasted 7 years. My wife's Android phone lasted 6 years. They were both replaced because the software was no longer up-to-date and it's simply no longer safe to use such an old phone.

A friend and colleague of mine have the same for their 5-year-old phone. Nothing wrong with it, it still works fast but there are no more updates!

In a world where everything has to be sustainable, manufacturers should simply provide at least 4 years of updates as standard!

Boy sometimes with how OS updates can destroy a phone or worsen it's performance

I wonder if OS updates is really a feature or a gamble

Which is funny because way back then it's always been praised , but most of us can't see things written in code to know what the update is really going to do to the smartphone

                                    Impressive, well done

years of updates is useless of your warranty is only one or two years.
All phones should have equal warranty as years of updates othervise they shouldnt even give it a try.
For a what sake in need a 5 7 or even 10 years of updates if for example something happens week after your warranty goes off you ahve to pay expensive repair.
Nobody will fix his 2 years old costly device. They will rather buy new one with new warranty for litterary same price as repair would cost.

justasmile, 25 Mar 20255 years of OS updates? You're definitely kiddingIf PCs can get support for more than a decade, so should mobile devices (also, Linux still has driver support for 20-year-old CPUs and GPUs). Obviously support on such devices is tied to OEMs more, so 5 years as a baseline seems reasonable enough. If it's too costly, then reduce the number of devices you make and stop having multiple companies (e.g. BBK, Transsion, etc.). These companies incur massive diseconomies of scale by splitting their work across so many companies and releasing so many SKUs. Plus, why compete with yourself in the market? 5 years is the minimum acceptable baseline, and I would expect 7 years or more from the larger companies too.
