Tecno promises 5 years of software support for the Camon 40 series

25 March 2025
The company is stepping up its game when it comes to software support.

justasmile, 25 Mar 20255 years of OS updates? You're definitely kiddingIf PCs can get support for more than a decade, so should mobile devices (also, Linux still has driver support for 20-year-old CPUs and GPUs). Obviously support on such devices is tied to OEMs more, so 5 years as a baseline seems reasonable enough. If it's too costly, then reduce the number of devices you make and stop having multiple companies (e.g. BBK, Transsion, etc.). These companies incur massive diseconomies of scale by splitting their work across so many companies and releasing so many SKUs. Plus, why compete with yourself in the market? 5 years is the minimum acceptable baseline, and I would expect 7 years or more from the larger companies too.

Dr. Watson, 25 Mar 2025"3 generational OS upgrades" I'm worried ... moreAny brand that attempts to use this reasoning as justification to end their software support early is going to commit brand suicide. But then again, I wouldn't be surprised if they do this...

We as consumers need to just fight the corporates at that point. Way too many examples of phones being suddenly dropped from.software updates by many brands recently, Most prominently Motorola

Well they're slowly improving and that's good. It's just a matter now of doing the same for the rest of their phones.

better than the 6 years support gimmick where the phone still uses a SoC below 1 million AnTuTu.

G3MR2906, 25 Mar 2025I guess the headline could be altered, coz the current head... moreYeah it reads like an intentionally misleading marketing line. It really should be changed to "Tecno pledges 3+2 years of software updates"

Darth Caesium, 25 Mar 2025This is still below acceptable. 5 *years* of OS updates + 5... more5 years of OS updates?
            You're definitely kidding

              Finally, it's worth it now

There should be regulations that every manufacturer of smartphones/tablets must provide at least 4 years of Android updates and the same number of security updates (unless after bankruptcy of course).

If there are manufacturers that offer more updates, that is their own choice.
Now you still have too often that many manufacturers only provide 2 or 3 Android updates.

I also do not believe that Tecno will really manage this. It is budget class. It will probably be 3 years of Android updates and 5 years of security updates.

Tecno camon 40 support 3 years os and 5 years security update 😮 while Infinix note 50 series only 2 years os and 3 years security update only 😞. Hopefully new zero 50 will also increase supporting software update.

G3MR2906, 25 Mar 2025I guess the headline could be altered, coz the current head... moreGotta get dem' clicks, I guess

Do note that OEM does almost no work for the security patches, other than pushing it to their users. The patches are provided by Google to the OEMs. So essentially the actual software support is just the 3 generation upgrades. But still, not bad.

                        Asus should take note.

Damn, what took em so long for just a meh software support?

Could've been better, but what can you do? Gotta sacrifice something for cheaper price, I guess

PatrickCzech, 25 Mar 2025Thoose phones barely get 1 year. They just launched how would you or anyone know that?

This is still below acceptable. 5 *years* of OS updates + 5 years of security updates should be the bare minimum, not this pathetic joke of an update policy.

AntonelPAPI, 25 Mar 2025Which 2 updates a year? Hahahahahaha on the s24 Android 15 ... moreHe isn't wrong; Android 16 is nearing the end of its beta phase, which I believe is next month. However, I think it will be officially unveiled in mid-May during Google's I/O event. I wouldn't be surprised if Android 17 entered its beta testing program this fall.

Lol, at least it comes with the latest OS v, unlike other some manufacturers. They promise 3 years of OS updates, but the device launches with Android 14, even though Android 15 is already available.

Which essentially means only 2 OS updates in practice

Dr. Watson, 25 Mar 2025"3 generational OS upgrades" I'm worried ... moreWhich 2 updates a year? Hahahahahaha on the s24 Android 15 and in this one we are barely, very barely in the unofficial beta of Android 16 yet, because Google will announce it in May like every year and until next year there won't be Android 17! Surely you use some Chinese brand that updates phones when they remember haha

Thoose phones barely get 1 year.

Good, Infinix really should follow Tecno in this case and step up their game to at least 4 OS updates soon.
