vivo X200 Ultra camera hardware detailed before launch, VS1 "AI ISP" does 80 TOPS

15 April 2025
That's a lot of performance - for reference, it's almost double what the Snapdragon X Elite's NPU is rated for (that's the laptop chip, not the mobile 8 Elite).

What I most hope from this AI image processing is that it can be switched off. Sensor and lenses seem already very good, why ruining all with crazy artifacts?
Where AI would be nice to have is before the shot, in subject and scene recognition for choosing correct exposure time, hdr level

My wish list: real time HDR on viewfinder like iPhones, reduced or elimination of post processing delays, and better stabilization for videos. Those are quite basic imo for a flagship smartphone, and should be well addressed before trying to be fancy.

Not if the actual performance gain from using these dedicated imaging chips outweighs the added latency. They say that X200 Ultra is now 3x more likely to capture the "decisive shot" ( probably referring to having less shutter lag) compared to its predecessor, so I suppose this would be hardly an issue in real life.

"how significant would be the end result?"
We will need to wait until the launch event of the phone for full information, but one of the use cases of the new VS1 chip is the new zero-lag portrait mode with "ray tracing rendering" (yes that's what they said in the presentation assuming that the translation is accurate) that can be also shot in 50MP or used in conjunction with flash.

"why would other OEMs had not done anything about it for decades?"
SD8E's ISP + DSP + NPU combo is probably plenty fast for most other manufacturers, it's simply that it was inadequate for more complex algorithms Vivo was trying to run. There are other manufacturers that put their own dedicated imaging chips on their phones, too, such as Sony and Oppo, so I'm not really seeing anything suspicious here.

Stop start, 16 Apr 2025A genuine question: What do you mean by 12 stops and 14 s... moreDynamic range is the ability of the camera when capturing, at the same time, the brightest and the darkest parts of a scene. If the system has high dynamic range, it captures without losing detail in shadows or glares, for example.
Stops are a logarthmic function that measures light exposition differences.
For instance, each stop represents double or half the light compared to the previous stop.
Don't forget that an image sensor is a semiconductor like, let's say, a diode. Its source is not a sinusosoidal waveform, but light. As the diode with high and low voltages, the sensor saturates with high light and there is a lot of noise in dark conditions
If this phone has 14 stop dynamic range, it means that it can capture from the darkest condition to the brightest, whith a difference of 2^14=16384 times more light in bright conditions than dark conditions

With this ISP are they able to use all 3 cams simultaneously? And do 960fps slow-mo? What is the usecase of this exactly..?

Anonymous, 16 Apr 2025Range in aperture or f-stops. The lower the number the more... moreNo, we're talking about dynamic range, which is a range of light intensities that can be captured and reproduced in a single image.

In this case, 12EV means the brightest and the darkest tone could be as wide as 12 stops apart before pixels get fully saturated or shadow details get indistinguishable from noise.

The fact that Vivo calls this new colour profile "Classic Negative" and not "Classic Neg." (Yes, this is the official name of Fuji's version) implies the lack of collaboration.

Maybe you should do some research before making stuff up next time.

Impressive on paper, BUT so far only Apple & Samsungs top models CAN do Ultrawide Panoramas, and there is no image stabilization on Apple's otherwise good 13/14 mm f2.2 at all, so you really do need to be very smooth and steady! But wait, here Vivo HAVE image stabilization on their ultrawide which has so much better an image sensor for it that both rivals should hang their heads in shame- since of course they could have the same setup already. I just hope GSMArena find out soon & let us all know.....
