Vodafone presented this year's holiday mobile phones that they will be offering on contract and Pay-as-you-talk basis. The contract handsets include some really nice recent phones, while the PAYT devices...

Sorry about earlier post ,,what happended their i dont know???My post was complaining about eric writing first how sad he was and about no innov8 on list..The set up for voda xmas is poor to me so may end up cancelling contract and moving to o2 prepay it depends on gsmarena review of xperia..I may get innov8 16gb till i saw sim free price on play.com £549 !!!!! cause my next laptop with good spec is only £449..what are they playing at??? you get some chips ,,software,, cheap lcd,, battery and charger and nothing new accept 8 mp cmos cam and they want that ampunt of cash,, well stuff that its daylight robbery..

What's the point of a 3.5G phone when it's restricted to 2G speeds?

That's why they usually have to make 2 different models or have both covered like the iPhone.

This drives up costs, manufacturers won't do it if they can't recoup that additional investment.

I'm not really sure about the exact reason...maybe due to the size of the country, where additional models would require additional support, which logistically speaking, may add up additional costs.

Or else, network service providers may not really be making as much $ as others around the world...I used to live in California and my "home" network (without roaming) may even be bigger than some states (if not countries!) elsewhere. Think about all the cost (especially the GSM network, which requires more cellular antenna) to cover all these areas...

That's why US will not likely enjoy super cheap monthly fees like US$4.5 (yes, US$4.5! NOT $45!) for where I live now...the fee already includes 500mins talk time, all call forward, voice mail, etc...VAS.

Back to so called high-end phones. Another reason might be, for example, phones costing over US$500 can easily be found elswhere around the world but not US...maybe because most Americans can do much more with the same US$500 for other stuff, such as better tires, stereo, alsrms, etc...for cars! (or they've to fix the car due to bad weather / crash)

Speaking of phones and cars, maybe someday the Americans will get more high-end phones. I remember in the 80's many cars in America, even so call mid-class (not size!) like Honda Accord, the base models still offered "manual" windows and door locks...and none of them had automatic climate controls, where in Japan power windows/locks/mirrors, auto climate control, were sort of standard, and GPS was already available.

20 some years later, now I find more variety in terms of cars and features in US than Hong Kong....and US now gets so many models...the TL, US Accord, Japese/Euro Accord (known as TSX), and basic cars like Fit get power windows/locks as standard.

Of course, I paid US$14000 for my mid-trim Accord back in 1988, not sure if I can even get a Fit now for that price!

It's similar line up to Vodafone Australia, Samsung G800 is $A299, Storm launches 1/12.

There's a Vodafone 830 as well (Made by Huwei, 3.2 Megapixel slide, 3.5G etc, etc $A199).

No sign yet of the Xperia.

I mean, honestly, I want to jump on a boat and move to UK. Carriers on the other side of the Atlantic are stuck with crappy LGs and Samsungs... ATT, Sprint, Verizon, TMobile -- when the US consumers will get high-end, recent devices and not some crap??! Even Rogers is getting Nokia E71. I mean the only question to ask is: WTF, US carriers???
