The 3rd column will be enable because the screen will be wider. Microsoft can do that but it'll make the tiles much shorter in both dimensions and the screen will look like over saturated with tiles. It will be hard to read. 1080P if enabled make the PPI(pixel per inch) in more quantity making more space available for each column.
The phone is also not obsolete. It's called "Small in size as compared to other". Get it now?

Unlike Apple, Microsoft is a software giant but Apple is both. Acquiring Nokia will make Microsoft both Hardware and software giant like Apple. Microsoft will be making its phones with it's own software if the deal finalizes which will be.

Nokia doesn't need MS to buy the phones department. They can survive on their own with WP8 devices only.
