AT&T to ditch WinMo over Symbian, iPhone may stay

05 Dec, 2008
It turns out that these days WinMo is not in its best shape. AT&T have just announced their plans to limit the smartphones in their portfolio to only one OS. They`ll have to choose one of the now existing platforms...

A small step for Symbian, A giant step backward for AT&T.
Symbian has great marketshare only because of the success of Nokia.
people buy Nokia because of the Hardware not because of its OS. It is simple to use but also very limited and the small amount of Symbian Applications compared to Apple and WinMo shows its unpopularity among Developers. Apple,WinMo and Android bring a lot of experience and know-how from Desktop Computing while Symbian is complete outsider.

tazaracsp, 15 Dec 2008that guy at att that told you symbian no way, is because he... moreI can't see 6.5 and 7 changing all that much from 6.1 unless Microsoft really pull their finger out and push through with WinMo 8 a complete redesign rumoured to be based on Midori, unfortunately for Microsoft I can't see them moving that fast.

I think Microsoft totally underestimated how fast the mobile market moves, the big swing to multifunctional, multimedia devices over the last few years has exposed areas where WinMo is lacking.

Hat's off to HTC, Samsung, SonyEricsson and others for trying to improve things at the interface level but it doesn't take long to expose the mess that lurks under the surface, which leads to high levels of frustration among inexperienced users sucked in by the hype.

that guy at att that told you symbian no way, is because he lives in the US and doesn't know squat about symbian. Symbian is an amazing operating system. Having an iPhone from day one, i must say os x is the most intuite and beautiful system i have seen on a mobile device. but Symbian to me and most people in the world where nokia rules outside the US is the best operating system. Symbian will be here for ever, and nokia will have a new interface soon, distancing themselves away from series 60. Leaving series 60 and 40 for the entry level models. Till this day, the nokia series 40 OS is the easiet OS in this world. Symbian, Android and ofcourse oS X will become the top through OS's and will Remain. WinMO, unheard of in 2 years tops.

Bad move. Symbian is so limited and maybe the worst smartphone OS. WM 7 is all most here, Android is very nice and both have very large devs sites. I'm glad I'm not a AT&T subscriber.

[deleted post]And they will soon be using it to start the Symbian Foundation.

"The closing of the offer is a fundamental step in the establishment of the Symbian Foundation, announced on June 24, 2008 by Nokia, together with AT&T, LG Electronics, Motorola, NTT DOCOMO, Samsung, Sony Ericsson, ST-NXP Wireless, Texas Instruments and Vodafone."

It might be because Symbian wasn't making money possibly because almost everyone uses pirated versions of all the applications, they were facing bankruptcy.

            Symbian is NOT Nokia.

Anonymous, 09 Dec 2008Do you think Nokia based on japan's market to get 42,4%...??Not all Nokia phones are Symbian, for every high end Symbian phone they sell there are a lot of cheaper phones like the 1100, 1650, 2760 etc

Are S40 phones classed as Symbian or would it only be the S60 one's with the Symbian menu key?

Surely by 2014 Nokia, Samsung, LG, SE & Motorola will be using Symbian Foundation? So it shouldn't really be such a problem to support only one OS.

The first Symbian phone was the Nokia 9210 with an open Symbian OS and was a success.
After that Symbian platform became a cooperation between Nokia Sony Ericsson Samsung and Siemens late 2000 and today the most phones with Symbian OS are Nokias and since Nokia has the 42,4%, Symbian is Nokia..

guys, wait till Linux comes into the action of providing OS to mobile devices.
One of the most popular linux versions which is called UBUNTU is coming to the mobile device market from 2010.
Ubuntu developers have already started developing a mobile OS version of Ubuntu.
Now this will be something really cool.
For me Mac Osx and Symbian both are very good OS. But winmo did not attract me at all. If it wasn't for HTC winmo had been gone a long time ago.
but my respect goes for the HTC developers, they really gave some good form factors to winmo os.
