I'm really not an expert in Android but it seems that Jolla will be getting apps from Yandex, not from Google. I'm sure someone will be able to explain this better, and the implications. As for Maps, I understand that they will be using Nokia's HERE services.
(edit: actually this article already says so)
"Yandex.Store is one of many alternative Android app stores, and it will come pre-installed as a way for Sailfish users to get Android app choices. The store is built by Russian search engine Yandex and includes 85,000 apps, including big names like Facebook, Twitter, Foursquare, Skype, Viber, and WeChat. The reason Jolla went with Yandex.Store instead of Google Play is that the company had to find an alternative to the official Android app store. Google Play is owned by Google and can only appear on authorized devices that meet certain standards. A non-Android device would never meet those standards, so tapping Yandex.Store is a sensible solution to the problem. The move to Yandex should give Jolla a chance to offer its customers apps not available in its native Sailfish app store."
And yes, hackers is what I meant. It's going to be a niche product, but then so was the 808 PureView and it still sold hundreds of thousands with little publicity. If Jolla can do that it will be a good start.

MdN8, 27 Nov 2013It can run Android apps, also the OS will apparently work o... moreMost high quality android apps leverage Goople Play Services and the Google Back end. For example, Google Maps API is the de facto mapping API on android phones and is proprietary. Most apps can't be ported over to other android implementations without very serious re-engineering. And we still don't know which API level jolla targets and what APIs are actually enabled; whether it'd allow change of launchers or other defaults.
But I'm cetrain this will turn out to be a great hackers device like the N9 and N900. But in the commercial market it can't really compete with android.
Also OHA members aren't allowed build/sell jolla devices. So, that's a large group of manufacturers who won't work with this OS.

Well, "It relies heavily on gestures" this is the problems, phones like this you needs a clean and dry hand all the time, otherwise it will slippery as hell! And as you can see in the video, some of the things you do and response for the action that require you to pull it down quite low and drag it up quite high. So if you finger slip……hopefully nothing important!

Unreasonably over priced, Outdated Specs and dull design. Only thing they're charging is of their Heavily designed android OS. Nothing special in it.

If their marketing campaign is smart enough, they will become relevant very fast.

More expensive than a Nexus 5 and doesn't come with the backing of a strong ecosystem. Hardware is nothing great either.
An admirable effort, but it will die quickly in the market. :)
