Interesting times ahead!Not GSM, not Windows to do paper works in Excel or Words and unable to sync information with other Windows OS machines, "Pre" would be my last phone to have. Just slide keyboard... what does it help when lacks of many other "universal" functions.
Touch screen, full Qwerty key board, Windows OS with mobile-office, plus ability to sync information, - say contacts that are kept on explorer, my old "Samsung i780" is tha best one available. Or, if being crazy about name "Palm", I think the "Palm Treo pro" is worth considering. To me,....not that price with those limited specs.

Samsung, Toshiba, HTC, Sony-Ericsson, Xillibri, BYB, and Asus have had these features for sometime. There are several more phones in Korea and Japan whose names are written in their characters that would also put iPhone 3G to shame. We can run hundreds of apps here in Asia without the internet. Even the old and cheap phones with no camera, no GPS, no Wi-Fi, no HSDPA, no Edge, can be used to pay your bills in the mall, at the metro-rail turnstiles, transfer funds to and from banks to mobile phone credits, and even get a fix on the location of your loved ones without using the internet or GPS. Your technology is surely antiquated.

Asked if he was referring his comments to Palm, Cook's said:
"I'm not talking about any specific company. I'm just making a general statement. We think competition is good, it makes us better. But we will not stand to have our IP ripped off. We'll use whatever weapons we have at our disposal. I don't know that I can be more clear than that."
and palm replyed with a lot of guts ...
"Apple was not the first to do multi-touch," Palm spokeswoman Lynn Fox told Reuters. She argued that multi-touch has been around for more than 20 years.
"Palm has been building its own intellectual property portfolio for 15 years, and we will defend it vigorously, if necessary," she added.
I guess it's going to be another big trial. I do hope that they come to an understanding - maybe palm will give something to apple like the gesture area and apple will let them use some multitouch instead :P

Palm must be get sued of copying or infringement. they copied the multi-touch and gestures that was patented by Apple. and most of the features of Palm Pre is such a rip-off from iPhone. bad Palm. such a schlemiel!

geez , i can't wait for the pre and new iphone(s) to hit the shelves so we can compare and see how the pre does matches up to it's competition.
I hope that all this competition will drive manufacturers to more affordable prices - right now i can't afford the iPhone (its's about 500 to 700 euros here, an unlocked version with no contract / the contract version is 179 but u have t pay a 39 Euro contract for 2 years wich ads up to 1115 euros! - I can buy a macbook at that price - even if i could afford it i would choose the macbook or any other laptop around 500 euros )
-the gphone and xperia are in between 500 and 600 euros so the 5800 tube(around 300euros) with it's not so great touch symbian and touch capabilities (allmost no gestures!) is the one i can afford or maybe an lg cookie , so i really hope the Pre will be around 400 euros.

I hope that it is clear to you that u made some wrong assumptions - for example when i said that all these smartphones exist now thanx to the iPhone i was talking about , G phone , Palm pre ,5800 Storm , and others in THIS category , i didnt mean all the smartphones...
i don't remember naming any phone a "copy" i just said they have copied some software features wich aren't allways copyrightable.
i won't comment on you making me an iphone freek , or calling my post stupid nor will i on other bad things u said.
it's clear to me that u have a level of comprehension that is , different than mine.
u said that you don't care to much about software because it can updated , for that u have to thank the iphone once again(and u still keep saying there is allmost no innovation in it - u must have a really new and unique meaning for this word). I dont remember sony ericsson or nokia delivering software updates for their old phones , allthough it might of been very simple, they choose instead to keep the newest software as a plus and a selling point for their newest phones , the only exception that i know.is the n95 wich was updated to n95 8gb software.(note that i live in romania: palm is allmost non present here and blackberry came a few years ago so i dont know if they deliver software updates.)
So , you appreciate more the hardware innovations . very well than. I will pinpoint them out so you can see that i have done my homework and in terms of phones i really know what i'm talking about.
I believe the iphone is the first phone to have a capacitive touch screen wich makes it not to respond to pressure but to human hand electricity - it is a far more accurate
I believe that it is the first phone to have a proximity sensor and a accelerometer sensor
Also , a small detail that not everybody notices: it is the first phone to have an (even though it was recessed) integrated 3.5 headphone jack - something very simple that any phone manufacturer could have done - but ALL of them refused (even when creating MUSIC PHONES) and , for marketing resons used proprietary ports , or in the best of cases: 2.5 headphone jack
i believe that if the iPhone was not here today Nokia would have kept this strategy for a long time
I would like to note that it took the LEADING PHONE MANUFACTURER 2 YEARS to come up with a rival for the iPhone , (allthough they had previous experiences with touchscrens) And this rival , The Tube , the 5800 to sum it up in one sentences i quote:"And even the mere mentioning of iPhone would be devastating on the 5800 morale." from the GSM Arena review and i ad that the 5800 has the older , resistive screen technology, accelometer and proximity sensor thanx to quess who? and i hope it would get updates , but i doubt it!
So, i hope that we all agree what the iPhone is , and what apple has done. I hope that they will split it in two or three phones - entry level - midrange - high end or bussiness-multimedia-simple or something to make it more adaptable to the market needs i hope they will make a non-contract-bonded more affordable version.

Phonemakers can only do so much on a small device for them to accommodate all our needs and wants on a phone. We wanted a sleek and thin design on a phone. Came the iphone. Now we complain "where's the keyboard?". So other phonemakers came up with a slide out keyboard on a touchscreen phone. Now we complain again "that phone is so thick". We wanted a bigger display. The iphone has a lovely 3.5 HGVA screen, but then we whine again on why HVGA only and not WVGA. So comes HD Touch with a 3.8 display with WVGA, but then battery is drained by its WVGA 3.8 screen so we complain again of its poor batt life. Some consumers give a lot of importance to BT stereo headset capability, but then the same people would complain about phones having such feature but not having a 3.5mm jack. As for me, I appreciate all of these high tech phones and all the efforts they put in. The iphone just happens to stand out for me among the rest for my kind of needs.
With today's technology, I don't think any phonemakers can squeeze-in all of the features that we want into a phone and give it a practical and acceptable hardware dimensions. To accomodate all of those desired features and battery life, the phone would probably have half the size of a laptop. And you got that right, we would swear about its size and weight.

However, i don't consider software-related features as innovations. Any mobile software can be upgraded and customized/redesigned. Hardware innovations are what I consider when choosing a phone. But mobile manufacturers would NEVER ever release a feature-perfect phone due to marketing strategies. Well, this is just my opinion and one may disagree like the one i did with "doesn't matter". I have owned a lot of phones from different manufacturers and one there's one thing i've learned... Consumer satisfaction will always evolve. And it all comes down to personal preference. That is why i never hated any of my phones even if some gave me nothing but headaches.. It's still a piece of technological breakthrough in the PALM of your hands.

It means that the iphone set the trend for other phonemakers to produce their own line of touchscreen phones similar to the iphone's platform. And yes, the iphone started an innovation as well. From scrolling, to multi-touch, to the double tap to zoom, to swiping, to accelerometer on a phone. No one is saying that the iphone is the first to offer any of those features. It's the execution and integration of those features that makes it innovative. Yes, it does lack some features, but name me a phone that has every possible features on them. NONE. What's irrelevant is your comment saying that the Mac OSX wouldn't have been created if not for other smartphones. Mac OSX was not inspired by smartphones. It's an OS for Apple computers that they implemented into the iphone. Bringing up Prada is also irrelevant because he never said that the iphone was the very first touchscreen phone.
