If Apple has done that much for the Open-Source movement then why are they keeping Iphone locked shut like it is. By the way I'm a gamer and I don't if you know much about that but Windows is like the only platform on a Desktop PC to support all the games out there right now. I don't really have a choice in that matter. You're probably one of those who think a 64 bit processor and a touch-id sensor is worth spending a fortune on just for the "hipness" while I actually look at what I can do to make my phone feel like its mine both from the outside and on the inside. You cant say the same thing unless you have a jailbroken Iphone. Your phone looks like all the other 123192461 iphones out there with a different background WHOA! DEEP STUFF MAN!

Americans will always be americans...& we can only do what we can i mean why should i like a phone thats expensive to buy, maintain and use. Samsung has really done well for us Africans and has taken over where Nokia is now failing

If you really cared about FOSS, then you would appreciate Apple's contributions to the open-source movement (launchd, GCD, CUPS, WebKit, OpenCL....). But openness to you probably means being able to install a new launcher. Crazy!

I can see why Apple is on the top still, But for me thats not a viable option. I like my smartphones "open/free", I want to be able to customize it the way I want it. Sorry to say Apple doesn't give that idea a single thought. You're locked into the same view from the moment you buy it until you decide to change. No widgets, No themes, no customization at all.
To each his own. Not saying that my Android is better but it just fits me perfect.

b) Americans (& apparently Kiwis too) place much more weight on the 'hip'-factor, i.e. gotta be seen with the coolest, trendiest toys otherwise you're a nobody. I.e., they're much bigger suckers for marketing. Maybe Apple's marketing doesn't translate well?

But why is Apple so much bigger than Samsung within the USA but so much smaller than Samsung outside the USA? Odd. I'm tempted to think support for domestic products but then again don't think so. Price carries a lot of weight. Also, the hardware of both is manufactured in Asia and the software of both is created in the USA. But perhaps the USA doesn't realize that.

i think EVERYONE who has ever owned an iPhone will know why apple are first, and everyone who is reading this going "iPhones suck, whats this guy on about?"then they probably own a samsung, which i have also owned (liked my S4 less than my iPhone 4S), but i guarantee you in New Zealand Apple will hold over 60%, cause iPhone's are everywhere
