17 April, 2009
We are continuing our dreary Q1 results coverage and this time it's Sony Ericsson. The company has just announced all the Q1 details and they are quite bleak at first sight...

I have p1i, but i really hated it. It was thick, bulky but not so much, camera sucks.

i dont like UIQ, and most of SE phones looks like similar (same design, same features)

Now if there is a touchscreen phone, with big screen, keypad/qwerty keyboard, wifi, good camera and video, good brand, thin, sexy, not sooooo expensive, and ____ OS.

The Sony Ericsson K800i has never been beaten. After going through several other phones, I am back to using one, and while the OS seems a little sluggish in parts in comparison to more recent SE models, such as the snappy W910 (that I happened to play with a few days ago), the K800i reaked of quality and did all it does well:
      a) The camera is still the best thanks to the large lens (megapixels are not the issue) and room filling xenon flash.
      b) Innovative features such as the clever self timer noise and easy to flick with one hand active slider.
      c) Excellent RDS radio
      d) Great connectivity for it's year (2006!)
      e) Nice bright screen
      f) Great to hold, there is something about the shape.

SE need to release the C901 that while lacking a 3.5mm jack is the perfect sensible cameraphone thanks to it's xenon flash and realistic 5mp camera.

The Idou will probably be too little too late because the iPhone '3' will have arrived, as will the Nokia N97 and of course, the current phone de jour, the LG Arena that seems to do everything relatively well.

Unless Nokia or SE come out with something really compelling, that combines the camera of the K800i, with the usability and quality of the iPhone, then in July, I'm shooting for an iPhone '3' because I trust Apple to support the platform. The only other platform that is as exciting is Android - and it will be interesting to see what Samsung's phones are like in the flesh. I got to spend a week with a Samsung ToccoULTRA and the build quality, screen and camera were excellent. (Only let down by battery life and slightly sluggish in places software.)

Come on SE, get that C901 out!

Yeah it's sad for SE. Recently they've been low, though every single their phone is so much better than the alternative offered by Nokia. I hope they get out of that hole they've been in recently. Sony has always been the innovative player no matter what. Yeah they doesn't open their standards

p.s: regarding Idou - as far as I know EXMOR can't record VGA video, only 720p/1080p, but this info can't be added on the specs until a real 12MPix EXMOR chip is ready and it's performance is tested fully.

W995 is not impressive at all. Even though it has an 8MP camera, Nokia N95, which was released in 2007, has even more features.

What about SE Idou? As far as everybody knows, it does not even have 3.5mm audio jack, MiniUSB, its video recording is only VGA at 30FPS and we are not even sure if it has stereo speakers or not.

The Idou final specifications should be much better than what we already know.

SonyEricsson never really recovered from a fire in New Mexico in 2004 which wiped out all the CPU's they were going to use in the handsets they were heavily promoting at the time (P1 etc) and were unable to deliver.

Nokia was affected by the same fire but because they had diversified their suppliers the effect was less, if something happens to a factory in China they've got factories in other countries eg Hungary to fall back on.

They've been playing catch up ever since.

Nokia buying Symbian didn't help things, I don't know if that's the reason they dumped UIQ in favour of WinMo but know that Symboan is open source they are coming back.

SonyEricsson have always been innovators inventing things like Bluetooth I think they'll bounce back, the still have their network equipment to fall back on, with a lot of new technologies to be rolled out (4G LTE) they should recover.

thats because SE dont have a new phone released for now and they dont have what to sell... but when W995 and Idou comes out things will change im sure for that

Those "Entertainment Unlimited" phones should have those features, which are found nearly in every high-end phone from the other companies, such as WVGA or D1 video recording, big screens at high resolutions carrying the latest technologies (+3", WVGA resolution & AMOLED), powerful processor, RAM and graphics acclerator, in addition to (3.5mm AUDIO JACK !!, powerful&big speakers, great internal memory + memory card slot, MiniUSB, Wi-Fi ... etc).

Otherwise, they should not call them "Entertainment Unlimited" phones.

As a previous SE fan, I should quit daydreaming and wait for other high-end phones from other manufacturers, such as i8910 Omnia HD from Samsung, KM900 Arena and Viewty Smart from LG or even the next surprise form Nokia. Unless SE brings something really worthy and mind blowing this time, however, I do not think so.

The silence is loud in here, where are the SE fanboys who were laughing at Nokia yesterday. With an ever shrinking market share currently at 6%, SE is just hopeless. To compound your misery,SE can't even make a profit and is making losses at an operating level.

You better pray the new products work out well coz the continued focus on high end products and a lack of a robust product portfolio are likely to continue haunting SE for a while.

Say what you want but NOKIA IS KING. OK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
