iPhone 3G S gets taken apart, CPU and RAM revealed

11 June, 2009
Apple were quite keen on emphasizing that the new iPhone 3G S was twice as quick as the original iPhone 3G the other day, but they never mentioned the actual specs of the chipset. Luckily details are starting to appear...

Phil Jackson, 15 Jun 2009The dude below still doesn't get it why GSM & CDMA availabi... moreSome guy was complaining about AT&T coverage and the iPhone there are no real alternatives if you want to use phones like the N97 or Omnia HD with 3G as AT&T is the only major US company that supports them.

Verizon = CDMA (they also have a habit of disabling wifi).
T-Mobile = GSM with a wierd 1700 3G band hardly anyone else uses.
Sprint = CDMA with fairly localized coverage.

The guy who made the original comment doesn't have much alternative but AT&T.

50% of iPhones are sold outside the US the 7.2 Mbps will be useful in places with more advanced networks and is faster than Nokia's flagship N97.

4G will see CDMA and GSM come together so will bring in a lot more choice, the chips are still power hungry so are likely to show up in modems first then move into handsets.

[deleted post]Samsung is an electronics manufacturer they make and sell components for a lot of companies across a wide range of products, other companies tell them what from their own designs and Samsung makes it for them.

Companies like Nokia also buy components such as flash memory from Samsung.

On the subject of games for the new hardware Assasins Creed just updated for OS 3.0 it went from 138MB to 150MB, I don't think the changes will be too hard for developers especially as most developers already have to deal with a range of hardware specifications, (apart from consoles).

I think this article is wrong! I checked a hundred of other sources and all agree on one thing ,the cpu's of the 3g and the old 2g are higher than 412 Mhz, they are about 600 Mhz. The Ram on the other hand is correct.
        Any thoughts?
Thanks 4 paying attention ! Bye!

The dude below still doesn't get it why GSM & CDMA availability in the US was mentioned in the context of why the iPhone is not optimized for SMS texting, the killer app of mobile phones. You can't see the big picture, that's the problem, just like US mobile phone companies & networks. What is common & standard in the US doesn't necessarily mean the rest of the world would copy it, often, it's the other way around. And that is why the US is lagging in all key metrics of mobile phone use.

A hardware keyboard still is the fastest and most reliable way of making SMS & voice calls, the top 2 most-used functions of a mobile phone. Even a teenager using a regular hardware 1-9 numeric keypad would type text faster than the most rabid iPhone fan using predictive word input, that's just the hard reality.

This is a discussion about Iphone not on the merits of GSM vs CDMA. If anyone really wants to know why the US market is a little bit behind the curve, its not the technology. CDMA is far more efficient than GSM. But GSM has the advantage of being a standard adopted by many countries, have a working group with the sole purpose of setting standards, planning the GSM roadmap, etc, which makes GSM rollout much more simple and from a business model perspective. Also GSM is designed to be backward compatible. Meaning the backbone, the GSM standard is common across each successor standard which makes adoption so much more cheaper. Much better than what the US market has, with its emphasis on telcos rolling out competing standards even though they use a common language. Then of course there's the problem of roaming. A person can travel from Portugal to Australia and never have to change SIM or be out of coverage. A person travelling from New York to Sydney can't do that (in the past). So US telco went GSM because its the logical thing to do. The tech maybe less sophisticated than CDMA, but its much more capable and established. E.g. CDMA has no operational competitor to 3G which while less efficient and has lower theorethical max speeds, is far more capable as a platform. Also, GSM is already working on 4G.

I didn't say the iPhone in the US runs on CDMA, read carefully next time. I mentioned CDMA because that was the dominant network infrastructure in the US until a a year or so ago (probably still is until now based on coverage), and that network doesn't support SMS texting, SMS texting was invented on GSM in the early 90s. And that is why I said those in the US are not familiar with SMS texting, because up until recently, they haven't even heard of it since it's not supported by the dominant netwrok infrastructure in the US. And that is also why Americans got easily dazzled by the introduction of the iPhone, even though its touch interface is not optimized for SMS texting, since most of them got by with Motorolas and Blackberrys and thought that was the state-of-the-art, when the rest of world had many more smartphones much more advanced than the iPhone for years.

Read up a little on why the US mobile phone market is primitive compared to the rest of the world. Finnish, Japanese and Korean mobile technology and network infrastructure and services is waay more advanced, those in the US still don't know what they are missing.

Jteve Sobs, 15 Jun 2009All that hardware and fancy UI, and it still can't do SMS t... moreOf course it's faster on the n97, it has a hardware keyboard doughnut. The 5800 is definatley not faster and more responsive. The keyboard for sms is far more advanced on the iphone. The preidiction is really good. Say for example you wrote a word saying 'hell' and you're going to say 'hello', when you reach the 'o' it puts a larger surface area around the 'o'. 5800 won't do that. Plus the screen on the 5800 is made from a cheap flexible plastic (im not saying that's a bad thing, i like this phone) therefore it slows you down because the screen flexes as you push it. Your just being a hater, get over yourself, i'm not an iphone user but i know a good phone when i see it.

All that hardware and fancy UI, and it still can't do SMS texting properly and fast enough due to lack of a hardware keyboard. Not everything is faster and better done on a touchscreen. I've compared SMS texting on the various touchphones since I find it the most-often used mobile phone function, more so than voice calls, and the 5800XM and N97 is still faster and more responsive in making & editing SMS than the HypePhone. Try it yourself.

But then again, Apple is a US company, and Americans haven't even heard of SMS texting before last year (their CDMA network doesn't even support SMS), while the rest of the world has made it the killer app of mobile phones for more than 15 years now.

to be honest if your so into photo's you shouldn't bother buying a phone for its camera abilities as it would never compare to the potential on a proper digital camera. lets face it, the world now is a very shallow one, an we generally like something more if it looks good. the iphone has a high reputation and does look very good, it runs smoothly and yes half the parts are samsung but then the google phone is a htc with google stamped all over it. of what the iphone is designed for it does well and thats the main point, a slr camera is good at what it does, the iphone is good for things like its interface and music, things like the camera are not on the iphones priority list. and after a while of slagging the thing off, i respect it for what it was designed to do, and therefore i will buy one.
