When it cost... moreYou've obviously never studied business or worked in manufacturing otherwise you'd know 60~70% margins are common business practice. Some businesses and industries even enjoy higher margins, just look at the shoes on your feet.

You guys need to understand that all high end phones are priced at $900 + in Korea, so it isn't overpriced for the market. In fact it is going to be one of the cheaper handsets for a high end device to launch.

It's all about what you get for your money.

When it costs $600 to put together but sells for $920 then that is better bang per buck than the iPhone that costs $300 in material but sells for $1000.

Greedy is a 70% mark up on something that has very little R&D work done over the previous device.

Think about it, the iPhone is the same OS, slightly different CPU/GPU that requires very little development to make function as intended in an already established OS, this is the same as the Note4 in a way but look at all the extra work Samsung put into developing the software for it, the camera, the SPen compatible apps, the ability to interface with a VR headset and recognise it should split the image in two and then send different data to each half. The camera change to OIS takes a lot of work to tune, the entire UI needed to be reworked for the jump to 2.5K res.

Then building new apps and algorithms to support the new features that use lots of mic's to detect who is talking fom where and to isolate the sound into individual discreet channels that can be played back without the sound from the other locations. While doing this it must also cancel out background noise.

This is just a few examples of where Samsung have spent money on developers time to make this work. This kind of software development team is huge and needs to be paid for before they can start making profit.

The software tooling costs must be huge when you consider that the average Dev in Europe is paid around 50 ~ 70k euro. I would expect that the team working on the entire OS/Apps/UI and so on is well over 500 staff.
Apple made a only a hand full of changes to the for iOS 8 and those changes are also for the iPhone 5 and 5S and 4/s I believe. This leaves a very small amount of work in terms of building the iPhone 6.

In Effect they only had to assemble a number of components into a case and provide the iOS dev's the code / drivers to make it run in the OS, not a hard task when you consider that the hardware is nothing more than a minor change in version number of the same components used in the iPhone 5s. Its the same architecture with a bump in Mhz and I'm not sure if the GPU even got a bump in core count.

So what makes this new device worth a 70% mark up, you would have gotten all the software features in the update on the iPhone 5s and the only thing you don't get is a change in screen res and NFC that can only be used for Apple pay which is not and will not be available in the UK or Europe for that matter for some year if it even takes off at all. NFC payment with a phone has been a long time talked about but never really implemented outside of the home territories of the manufacture for the most part.

Do you not think apple should have been a little more respectful of you and your money, their tooling costs are minimal compared to others who still sell for less and do more work.

With the iPhone phablet transforming into an iBanana today, what better time to release the best phone of 2014.

To the few complaining about the price. It's on par with any other top end device at release (will drop quickly) and we'll below the poor quality iPhones.

You all can say the Note 4 is overpriced but at least it doesn't bend like the "premium metal" on iPhone 6 plus. hahaha

All phones get sold at a profit mark-up - it's what you're getting for that price which should matter.

                                      $900 is insanely overpriced.

And the Note Edge is vaporware, as expected.
