A Huawei Mate 70 RS Ultimate was disassembled to extract the Kirin 9020

The Huawei Mate 70 series launched with a mysterious new chipset – the Kirin 9020. Huawei hasn’t revealed much about it, so people have had to do their own digging.

Blogger Yang Changshun Repairman opened up a Huawei Mate 70 RS Ultimate and desoldered the chipset. The carrier board is larger and thicker than previous Kirin 9000 chips, but that doesn’t reveal much about the silicon inside.

From what we know so far, the Kirin 9020 has an 8-core, 12-thread CPU with one 2.5GHz core, three 2.15GHz cores and four 1.6GHz cores (the last four are single-threaded). The GPU is a Maleoon 920 running at 840MHz.

Moving away from the chipset, the Mate 70 series apparently uses a material called titanium basalt to improve the drop resistance of the phones. You can see the drop tests in this BiliBili video. Additionally, Huawei switched to second-gen Kunlun glass, which has double the drop resistance of the first-gen.
